I stuck in an early guess because, for the present, I can't log in over
weekends, so it was my last chance. I can't believe it would bias anyone's
choice (unless he might actually have picked my word), or that it could
matter as long as he didn't then pick my word.
Will try not to do it again. (I suppose I might have *won*, & then the
game would have been down for the weekend!)

Sorry, Dave: I should have decorated my #165 comment with lots of your
<sfsf>s (did I get that right)?

But of course, you all knew that, since it was Friday night and I was
getting ready for _Mystery_Science_Theater_3000_, right?

Good going, davel.
Some observations about the differences between this and the oral version
of letter.match:
1. The written game is *much* shorter than the oral game.
2. I can't speak for others, but I find myself choosing words that
fit all the previous clues. This is nearly impossible to do in the
oral version, where the tactic is more to isolate and identify
individual letters.
3. Somebody's going to computerize this, searching a dictionary for
all words consistent with the clues up to a given point. (Maybe
Dave has already done that 8->?)
Carry on.

I would if I had a suitable online dictionary. (There's probably one on
Grex, for spell, but I don't know where it is or its internal format or
how to make it cough up a list of 5-letter words, & its vocabulary is likely
limited.) I confess to using my word-processor's spell checker for ideas.
I am thinking of a 5-letter word, but if no one gets it by around 5 PM I
will pass it to Rane (if he doesn't complain too hard too quickly). My home
modem is no more, & I will be away from the office for a few days. So
guess fast, folks. (Rane, you may guess too, up to the moment I email you
this afternoon. I will try to check in every couple of hours today. If
no one guesses it & Rane prefers, he may just reveal the answer & start over.
I didn't mean to get to this point.)

I'll pick it up wherever you leave it, Dave. I will probably not be on
again until this evening, so you won't hear from me until then.

Rane will have it, as soon as I mail him. I don't know when I'll be back
on line, for sure. (Unless my new modem comes through it may be a while.)

(not sure I can see an operational difference between "cooperating"
and "competing" in this particular game, since all information obtained
is shared by everybody.)
