It is common for people to *claim* that racial hatred is promoted by
some speech, which is actually completely free of such. The word
"niggardly" comes to mind.
Anyway, I was not "worrying" about the meaning of "cheat". I was just
pointing out that it is very difficult to make a fully correct categorical
statement, especially in ethics.

Yeah, I am one of those people who could never in a million years be
able to cut it in academia and I *know* that is for the best.

#175, para 2> Ok, we've moved from semantic games to rhetorical ones. This
thread BEGAN because you made a categorical statement about ethics.

(Also, I realized this wasn't the sort of item where people grouse if it's
shanghai'd, so I'm not going to worry about dropping it after all.)

I couldn't either. I just can't manage to convince myself that anyone
without tenure automatically is worthy of the same level of disrespect as a
panhandler.
(Yes, I saw many staff-professor confrontations at MTU. Why do you ask? ;) )

Bruce, please avoid interfering just this once. Sell tickets instead,
and make a videotape to sell later.

Well, in 200 years, people will still value Lewis Carroll's contributions to
art, and you'll just be some dead person.

Well, I wouldn't know, but Alice was supposedly based on some young
girl he fancied.

You have the words in the wrong order. Alice was based on some young girl he
supposedly fancied. The existence of Alice Liddell, a young girl that Rev.
Dodgson knew, is fairly non-controversial. His emotional attachment to her
is fairly evident. Whether there was a sexual interest as well, or not, is
the matter for dispute.
