On Tuesday at 3:30 PM I was trying to send a message in Pine and I got this
message:

ld.so: call to undefined procedure _sigpause from 0xf77134ac

It then dumped me out to my shell prompt, but typing had no effect. (That is,
the shell wasn't accepting any input.) Did Grex crash at that time, does
anyone know? Is that what I saw?

And BTW I disagree with scg about the dialin lines too. I think we should
get them out of the queue as quickly as possible.

...and nobody called anybody 'idiot.'

(the idiot thing, or some equivallent language, was in mail to staff from an
angry user)

I'm extremely concerned that we're driving away local dialers-in by
the queue, but let's take the discussion to Coop.

Some of the modems are not connecting correctly... turned out my modem
programming cable went bad today, and the other is at the office... :(

OK, all the modems should be OK now.

I think someone is trying to get into my account.

2 failures since last login. Last failed 17:57:18 from 205.211.3.2.

At that time, I was watching a Clint Eastwood movie on TNT.
How can I find the source of this attempt?

response 159 of 283: Mark Unseen   Nov 3 19:03 UTC 1997

RE #158 I didn't know that Clint Eastwood made movies on explosives.

Very funny, but I was being entirely serious. I was NOT at my computer at
the time and that bothers me, dammit.

I wouldn't worry about it. If someone was trying to guess your password
they'd have tried more than twice. Most likely someone who uses the
name "omni" on some other system got mixed up and tried to use it here.

My apologies if the joke in #159 was found to be inappropriate.

It was quarter to six in the morning, Richard. I'm usually a little more
than grumpy at that hour. Apology accepted.

/a is full. Well, actually it has -12 available. Feel free to use it at
your heart's content.

How about moving some of the useless data over to /dev/null? ;-)

I've tried joining the new auction, but all I get is old auction.

response 168 of 283: Mark Unseen   Nov 6 23:50 UTC 1997

As of last night, the new auction is ready to go when the cfadms get time to
change the pointers around and make it pubicly accessible.

The new auction conference is now publicly accessible as

I've installed a new version of Backtalk here on Grex.

It should look much the same, though there are a number of bug fixes.

It should be noticably faster, though I'm not yet convinced that it
really is.

There is a problem in the current version can cause interference with
the Picospan "index" command. I'll have this fixed in a couple days.

response 171 of 283: Mark Unseen   Nov 7 23:36 UTC 1997

OK, the problem with "display index" should be fixed.

response 172 of 283: Mark Unseen   Nov 8 03:00 UTC 1997

re 170: It seems faster to me right now, but the performance varies
depending on the load on Grex.
