Thanks, I will try them again soon. Bill is looking forward to getting online
again so he can finish figuring out how to set up the faster modems for grex.

I was assuming he'd done that, but it won't hurt for me to do it again
in case he didn't.. (As long as I remember the "-HUP" part, anyway.. :-)

Re #147: I believe that another motivation for running idled was to
prevent people from using interactive tty's to run things that are
essentially non-interactive (bots & such) - idled would log the person
off, then robocop would kill any processes the person had left running.
I'm not sure how effective that is, since idled isn't too hard to fool.

I dialed grex and got a few lines of garbage. Please keep working on the
modems.

response 160 of 276: Mark Unseen   Dec 6 14:43 UTC 2005

Right, the modems are *still* not working. I have no way to access my
mail. Of course, if we had installed a real web-based mail system by
this time, which I campaigned for last year, this would not be a
problem.

Oh, well - step by step progress.

I'm using the real Grex web-based mail system now....via telnet (ssh).
Your machine probably supports it. Try it.

Re #158: Dunno. I'd hate to get into a situation where staff has
to run around killing bots manually.

I turned idled back on because when I tried to ssh in yesterday I didn't
get a pty and had to retry for about 10 minutes before I grabbed one as
someone logged out. I didn't want other people to go through the same
process, as we've already had enough frustration over service disruptions.

Some machines (at public libraries) do NOT provide telnet.
If you want web-based email, sign up with sdf for $1 lifetime membership, and
use squirrel mail there.

I don't know about public libraries, but at various sites I have visited and
used public computers, at some universities, I was able to download Putty
and ssh. Why don't libraries provide Putty (or equivalent)?

SSH *includes* the capability of web-based mail. I think you mean

If you want web-based email, I have 100 invites to Gmail that I can give
out. And when I've used them all up, I'll probably get 100 more. Let me
know if you want one.

You don't need an "invite" to obtain a gmail account. They'll
send the key as a text message to any cell phone.
