Oh heck. Next thing I know they will have Chem Profs and math majors on
there. Weiss, were you aware of this? :) <adbarr drivels on his drool>

I wasn't a "computer professional" when I first decided to run for the board,
if that helps any.

Telling ppl that just b/c all the Grex directors are now white, and the vast
majority are male, doesn't mean that it has to stay that way is racist?

No, but saying that we are specifically encouraging people of color
to be board is.

Ok. How about "racially oriented". You make a good point, vm. Racist
has certain negative (really negative) conotations that should not
be attributed lightly. Glad you said that.

If they're not interested, they're not interested.
Look, let me tell you this: these guys don't want to be asked. they
see it as condescending. I know, 'cause that's what I hear when some
black guys are talking about inequality- That they don't want to be treated
ANY differently than anyone else, at all. They feel like you aren't interested
in them as people, just as some racial-diversity trophy, that you can point
at and say, "see, we're politically correct". Who'd want that?

Well, interestingly put.. I must say I _think_ I comprehend
the reasoning behind that.
Rane <from way back>- My definition of "getting around grex" must
be highly different from yours, as I am learning quite a bit from my
book.

If I were a member of a group whose leadership was almost exclusively female,
and was interested in a leadership position for myself, I think I would be
more inclined to try for it if there was some encouragement, even generalized,
from someone at the top...

Re #162, you overstate the homogeneity of black opinion - members of the same
race have been known to hold different beliefs. An obvious analogy is the
variety of opinion regarding "affirmative action;" some want quotas, some
want none of it (i.e. "they don't want to be treated ANY differently," as
you put it).

Hey, I'm just relating my expeience. This one guy was so mad at
his boss- he thought he got the job 'cause he was qualified, and found
out later it was to fill a quota. He quit.

For whatever it counts; while there are abrasive users, they should not
be counted as the majority. That doesn't mean they should be ignored,
but it does mean they should be kept in perspective; for every abrasive
user there are 20 silent types, and the real trick is to figure out what
they think and to come up with solutions people can at least respect,
and ideally will be pleased to live with. It's impossible to please
everyone all the time, but the only thing worse than attempting to
please the unpleasable is to give up in despair. Which is all just a
very long way of saying I think Valerie has done an outstanding job for
grex, and I hope she'll continue to find the patience.

You deserve that. You do *do* a lot here, thank you!
But, I still can't agree with the idea of seeking out people for their
*physical* characteristics. It, by iteslf might not be strong enough
to be racist, but it can lead to *bad* habits..
