Ithaca, Michigan is North and a little West of AA, but Ithaca, NY is
almost exactly 500 miles East (via Cleveland and the Southern tier).
It's a tad closer via Canada, but not enough to notice, and the
border crossings are a pain.

We won't do our canoeing until summertime.

Unfortunately, I will be working all summer and taking classes on the
weekends, so this summer's out... maybe next? Hopefully?
Border crossings are a pain, everytime I go to Canada, I feel like
they're eyeing me like a criminal and are suspicious of me as if I were
trying to sneak something into the country... gee... all I want to do
is visit my cousins... sheesh. ;=)

I've never had trouble crossing into or out of Canada, and I prefer it
a *lot* to going anyplace near the crazed cops in Ohio.

Unforunately, the Caniadian border people use race and other sterotypical
items to determine how much scrutiny to give crossers.

That is so true... #153, I'm referring to. I get looks all the time from
people everywhere just because of what I physically look like. Having
grown up in a predominately caucasian community, I've had to deal with
lots of that. Some people just look at me, make stereotypes, and don'
bother getting to know the real me... but I just figure they wouldn't be
worth being friends with anyway, if they can't look past my physical
features. The other day, a very successful Asian woman came to guest
lecture in one of my classes, and she says that she doesn't mention her
last name when she makes phone calls, so people won't know, since you
never know who you're dealing with out there. Luckily we both can say
that, "My accent, if any, is New York.

I didn't have any problem crossing the AmeriCanadian border on my
way to Ithaca, and I *know* I look thuggish.

Growing up in New Jersey and my dad is from Brooklyn and then living in
the south-west has taught me that it is the New York accent that lets
people know I must be a shady individual. An Italian name used to confirm
the suspicion. Now the oriental look combined with the accent may fit
the new stereotype. Up in Sault Ste. Marie, people always ask me if I am
an indian now that my accent is midwestern. What a country ;-)

Steve, our scale should be logarithmic because after 300 miles of travel,
what's another 100 or 200. After 500 miles another 300 or 400 is nothing.

Carson, you don't look thuggish. ;=) Just weird. *grin*

And a New York accent helps me, because you'd be surprised how people
assume anyone who speaks English well is caucasian... if I only give
my first name and talk on the phone, people can't form prejudices.
It doesn't get rid of their prejudice, but it certainly makes them
look at me in a new light, when they meet me, if they are like that to
begin with.

On a side note, I found it quite amusing when one day I was talking to
a friend in Cantonese, she having only been in this country for two
years and having a noticeable accent. We approached a group of people
and switched to English, and this weird look appeared on these people's
faces... I later realized because my friend had an accent and they heard
us talking in another language, they had automatically assumed I would
have an accent too, and were quite surprised to discover that my accent
was no different from theirs (they being from N.Y. and N.J.)

It seems natural, to me, to suppose that someone speaking another language
would have some "contamination" of English. I know that when I learned
Spanish, it affected *my* English to a certain extent, and I never came
anywhere CLOSE to fluency... *shrug*

I think she means they're so berserk as to actually give speeding tickets!
And they don't buy "I'm from Michigan, I didn't know Ohio had speed limits!"

response 168 of 259: Mark Unseen   Feb 11 18:30 UTC 1995

So let's get the first one going!
I have counted... and there are only 470 days until I graduate.
Wait, why does that number sound so big?
*sigh*
Oh well, still, I'll visit A^2 someday...

Yes, lets. Hey Amy, it isn't that bad. Think of your time of
confinement as a mere 11,280 hours. This also translates into 676,800
minutes, or, 40,608,000 seconds. ;-)

I wonder if the best thing for getting this idea off the ground would
be to get a survey out to people, asking where such a convention might be
held, and what the chances are of thier attending, given which locations?
nephi
response 170 of 259: Mark Unseen   Feb 12 06:53 UTC 1995

I'll attend any Grex convention less than 600 miles away from my home.

I wish I could say the same, but really guys, I can't walk 600 miles,
and get all my work done. ;=) Can't say I've tried though, and
I'll have to admit I pulled something off last semester I didn't think
I could either, so who knows? ;=)
