Let's say 8PM then. Who can make it then?

I can make that

I'll have my son with me that evening, and that's too late for him to
be out bowling. I'll have to skip that evening.

Hmmm - we can go earlier, then. What time do you get off work, John?

response 156 of 217: Mark Unseen   May 31 23:27 UTC 2002

I get off work at 5:00. If it's at 7, I can be there; it's just that
starting at 8, we wouldn't be back home until probably 10. I prefer
not to have him out that late.

7:00 on the 19th at Cubs. Woo hoo!

response 161 of 217: Mark Unseen   Jun 3 14:53 UTC 2002

We wound up going to Cubs yesterday because Belmark is closed on
Sunday. Who ever heard of a bowling alley being closed on Sunday?

Conger, ea and I caravaned to Cubs, and were later joined by Carol. We
got a lane right in front of the TV so we could watch the Tigers lose.

Mark experimented with getting some break on his ball, with my inexpert
tutelage. Eric experimented with throwing his ball hard enough to
shake the building (that guy is strong!). I experimented with rolling
the ball forward with some success. I almost picked up a 6-8 split one
time. I had a lot of practice with shots like that, unfortunately.

Before Carol got there, the rest of us had one game which was extremely
close; there were something like 4 points separating the leader from
last place. I won't list our exact scores because I don't remember
them, but let it be said we were all solidly into 3 figures. Think of
them as being scores of 250, 260, something like that. Not that any of
us has ever, or will ever, bowl a score in that range, but it won't
hurt anything if you think of us as being that good. For purposes of
determining if you're good enough to join us, yes, you are. We're not
competitive at all. We're social bowlers.

We all had a good time, I think. We bowled for 2 hours.

I'm thinking it might be worth buying bowling shoes, to avoid the expense of
renting them each time. Does anyone know where to buy bowling shoes?

I know Bel-mark has a store inside where one can buy various bowling
accessories, but its hours are not very convenient. I once attempted to buy
some bowling shoes in an e-bay auction. I didn't succeed.

Honestly, everyone I know who's ever owned a pair of bowling shoes has stolen
it from a bowling alley. This should help in pinpointing the demographics
of the people I tend to hang out with. Something tells me that's not what
you're looking for, though, as walking back into a bowling alley with a pair
of shoes stolen from that alley is probably pretty foolish.

If you are going to bowl a lot and want the best in a shoe, the pro shop at
Colonial Lanes is a good place...shoes are $100-150 there, so you'd have to
bowl a lot to make them worth the money. If you want something more
mid-price, try Dunhams or another sports store. If you just want some shoes
to save the price of rental, try K-Mart, they have some decent ones.

steal some and then change the laces and make them a new color.

wear some of those glasses with the fake plastic nose attached & moustache
and you're all set.

don;t forget the afro wig.

(I bought bowling shoes a couple of years ago at Dunham's for a folk
dance class. they're not all that expensive; I think I paid less than
$20. also, they're not as ugly as they used to be when they were all
leather. mine look a little like the Converse All-Stars revamp.)

I think I might try the K-Mart option - thanks Polly!

BTW - you sound like you must be a bowler in Ann Arbor. Would you like to
come bowl with us some time?

I'm thinking of getting a bowling ball. I have a hard time finding one
at the bowling alleys with which I'm comfortable. I don't have big
hands but I have thick fingers.

K-Mart has them, but I'd spend the money at a pro shop, since you want
someone who actually knows something about bowling to drill it for you.
When I got mine, the pro had me bowl a bit, to get an idea of my approach
and grip.

response 171 of 217: Mark Unseen   Jun 4 04:21 UTC 2002

How much does it cost?

I've bowled 4-5 times in several years. I'm not at all sure the
expertise will be worth the cost.

I bought my ball in '84 or '85, I think it was, so I've no idea what current
prices are like.

There's a WWW site called "ballreviews.com" that reviews bowling balls,
and has forums for discussing bowling. Under the reviews there are 6
pages of maybe 50 discussions (basically items) of different types of
bowling balls. There's repetition, but man... I would never have
imagined there are dozens or hundreds of different types of bowling
balls.

Here's a pretty much random sample of a comment about a bowling ball:

Another great ball from Track. Versatile, Powerful and if that's not
enough it's nice looking. I have been able to use the ball on
conditions where the only head oil is outside of the 5 board. It has
the length to get to the break point and the drive to get to the pocket
from way outside. I don't generate a lot of revs but playing inside of
twenty with a little head oil and dry to the right of the fourth arrow
is easy to play with this ball. It floats in to the dry and builds
energy for the backend drive to the pocket.

I would rate this ball an 8.5 out of 10 based on the versatility and
the energy it saves for backend reaction. The only problem could be if
you have carry-down but that is where the new Track Spell should come
in.
