quince 1 brighn (welcome! glad you joined the fun!)
mucous 2 carson
hubbub 6 kentn And, we have a WINNER.

I was trying to solve the problem myself as you-all guessed - to see if
I could follow the logic that would lead to the correct guess. Well,
I couldn't. Knowing the word made it impossible to *concentrate* on
the clues.

Well, we had a *lot* of letters eliminated and that helped. I spent
quite a bit of time looking at the words that had hits (after getting
rid of the known-wrong letters at that point):

     _U_F__ (curfew 1)
     NUD__K (nudnik 1)
     _U____  (curlew 1) --> 2nd letter definitely a "U"

     _(U)BR_C (rubric 2)
     Q(U)ORUM (2)
     _(U)_OUS (rufous 2)

The last two "2" hits have a "U" in common in the 5 position, which is
a possibility (it didn't seem that _UOO__ would be very likely, for
example, or if you really look at those "2"s you can see that if the 2
in rubric is _UB___ then you have to eliminate the OR in quorum, making
that 5 position U reasonably likely--although QU____ is good, too; if
the 2 in rubric is _U_R__, then the 2 in quorum will not have one of
Q_O_UM, which means for rufous you are left with _U__US, still looking
pretty probable for a _U__U_). If _U__U_ were the case, then what
about rubric? Which of the "B" "R" or "C" works? So I scanned the
dictionary for:

     _UB_U_
     _U_RU_
     _U__UC

with the remaining first letters (DEGHIJLNOQUVWXYZ), with Q being a
very likely first letter given a U in position 2. I didn't find a
whole lot...at least many that didn't contain letters known to be
wrong. "Hubbub" was one that fit...and saved me from scanning a large
portion of the dictionary after first scanning "Q" :) I admit, I made
a few assumptions but that's what you have to do sometimes.

Okay, I'll be thinking of a word next time I log in (couldn't seem to
get through on the Internet most of today, so that's why I haven't
responded sooner).

Or, you can enter cat /u/kent/letter.match (it's not a very long list)
Or, you can enter less /u/kent/letter.match (if you like more features
                                                than 'more')
Or, you can enter...(sed, awk, grep, perl, etc. commands)...if you
like to do things strangely.
