You know, drivers *do* benefit if more people take public
transportation which is why I would support paying extra taxes to allow
AATA to run with no fares even though I would probably still drive to
work in my car. Although, I would probably use the bus more for short
trips in the evening and on my days off.

I've noticed a very new-looking purple bus on the Carpenter Road route.
Very different than the usual AATA buses. What's the story with that? Is
it something special, or a new look they're going to switch to as they buy
new equipment?

The purple bus is a new, smaller coach that will be put into service in
the fall as a downtown circulator. I think we are getting two, or maybe
three of them. Right now we are using them on the 22 route as
"shakedown" trips. The coach is a new model, never in service before,
and we want to make sure it is reliable, and the manufacturer fixes all
the problems before we start the new service.

Gotcha. It's certainly sharp-looking, though that's partly because it
hasn't had time to get scraped and dinged up like the other buses.

I saw it this afternoon. What sort of new features and advantages does it
provide, or is it just a new addition to the fleet?

I haven't seen anyone argue against public transportation because it's a
nuisance to cars on this forum. In fact, I don't think there are any
substantial arguments of that nature anywhere, keesan, so where are you
getting that? Several people have contended that public transportation is
not the miracle cure you claim it to be, because our current population
distribution does not support it. That's a big difference from the viewpoints
you're construction. Gull is definitely not an apologist for big business,
so when he brings up the likelihood of railroads being sued because they have
deep pockets, it's not just rhetoric.

The straw man you're arguing against doesn't exist. In fact, I'll bet that
almost anyone participating in these discussions thinks that public
transportation is a good thing, on the balance.

Who here does NOT like public transportation and think that it is a good
public resource?

Is there any public transportation that would get me commuted
to work in Downtown Detroit, if I should find a job there? Direct
from Ann Arbor? How about at some point along Michigan Ave.? Say
like in Wayne, or better Canton (western edge of Wayne County)?

There is nothing from Ann Arbor. Once inside the Wayne County
jurisdiction, you may find SMART buses, but most of those are local to the
township senior/handicap transport. DDOT and SMART recently announced som
"working together" arrangements, but I don't know if they have been
implemented. Check with Detroit Department of Transportation DDOT to see
what connections they make.

Also check the travel time. Local stops, traveling 12 miles per hour, can
kill cross-county travel. You're looking for express park and ride
service.

Besides the Ann Arbor to downtown Detroit train, there are (or used to be)
three buses a day from here to there and back. Greyhound.
