Radio sheds are not uncommon at the base of radio towers to house the
transmitters. What about housing Grex in one of those sheds HQ and
Builders Square always seem to have on sale. The metal ones won't even
go up in flames! Easy to vent, phone and electrical hookup could be
provided for and an old power meter form the electrical utility to keep
track of consumption. Use cinder blocks for a foundation so it's easy
to move. Build it on a wooden foundation that sits on the cinder blocks.
Now all you need is a vacant spot on someones lot. Put it in a trailer?

Pretty nutty, huh?

Soo - when is the rehearing before the full Building Board of Appeals?
I'd *love* to testify. I assume others would as well.

This item now linked to the "move" conference.

"j move" for all your Grex-move discussion!

Re 129, Dave's response asked about "rehearing," not "rehearsing."
I misread it the same way the first time through, which is how I
know where you got the "rehearsal" idea. :-)

Another idea would be to leave the Grex box on the floor, with no table and
no chair an tell the city the the cupboard is simply an electrical storage
room. They should not be able to complain(If worst comes to worst, remove
the keyboard!).

At my school, our 3 servers, P.A. System, Internet routing system, coffe
machine, and a workstation are all housed in a room no larger than a mini bus.
Not to memtion that there is normally 3 people in that room working and no
one complains!

Good luck on whatever you do(I wish I could help, but I really don't think
that Grex wants to move to Canada, let alone the area that I'm in!)

I get the impression that the room could be as small side to side as we want,
as long as it had high enough ceilings.

Say, what's under the floor? How feasible would be busting up the floor,
digging it out, and laying a new floor? This would effectively provide more
"ceiling space"...

Well, dirt, but dirt that holds the house up...

Trying to modify the house likely isn't worth it. We've put a lot into that
space, and we are likely to have more trouble anyway. I'd like to see us into
some kind of commercial space, hopefully at a good rate.

Digging oout the basement like that would put Grex in a nice sump ;-)

Yes, but the City of Ann Arbor wouldn't object to that, since
that would make a fire even less likely! >8)

response 139 of 561: Mark Unseen   Jul 1 06:08 UTC 1996

But it would make a short more likely. I think they might still object.

response 140 of 561: Mark Unseen   Jul 2 19:42 UTC 1996

ummmm - ddid grex +drop+ the ceiling height? did grex +raise+ the
floor height? .....is that entire basement 'illegal' because it's
too short for the city?

what is the height requirement? what is the height? what is the basement
height? .... adn *WHEN* did this "rule" get ammended adn what was it before
that time?

remember to that the m-b0x was a tenant before grex adn all we did was
spruce up the place. grandfather clause anyone?
scott
response 141 of 561: Mark Unseen   Jul 2 21:11 UTC 1996

I believe we had to rebuild the Dungeon room in another corner of the
basement, killing any grandfather clauses that may have existed. There's
nothing wrong with the basement, you just can't have an office down there.

response 142 of 561: Mark Unseen   Jul 2 22:53 UTC 1996

Right. Also, when M-Net was there, it was lmaster's house, and he was
involved in M-Net pretty extensively, so it was considered a residential use.
In this case, we're renting an office (at least, the city says it's an office)
in a house where none of us live.

response 143 of 561: Mark Unseen   Jul 3 07:25 UTC 1996

ummm, same corner ... walls shifted a bit to accomodate a (new) spiral
staircase in the very corner. but i dont think there was any lowering
or th ceiing nor raising of the floor.

we need to at least get an extention til the upcoming lease ending date
in the *very* worst case.
scg
response 144 of 561: Mark Unseen   Jul 3 07:27 UTC 1996

Actually, TS, that would be the best case. What are the chances of the city
giving us that?
tsty
response 145 of 561: Mark Unseen   Jul 3 20:52 UTC 1996

pretty darn good if we appeal fro a 'forever" approval and , if necessary,
and only *after* 'forever' might be denied, then settle on the
normal end of the lease.

Why this apparent predeliction for underground facilities? Perhaps Grex
sould look for an abandoned mine, or a Titan II silo?

Has whoever is looking for a new location considered a nother town close to
wherever Grex is?(assuming that it's not too far away)?

response 148 of 561: Mark Unseen   Jul 4 03:48 UTC 1996

That would mean losing our current, well known phone numbers and possibly
some or our local users (Ann Arbor is the borderline for many calling areas).
It may come to a point where we have little alternative, but I'd
rather see Grex seek Ann Arbor locations if at all possible.
scott
response 149 of 561: Mark Unseen   Jul 4 11:57 UTC 1996

It would be worse than losing our phone number. Almost all the staffers live
in Ann Arbor, and I don't think any want to move.
