Do we here anybody still calling for an ascii-art conference? I'll do the
work, but it hasn't been talked about much... still need a fairwitness,
etc.

ASCII art, like the stuff that get constantly read into party?
Ick. Only if it had better stuff than the USS Enterprise flipping you off

I'd rather have it in a conference than in the main party channel. I can
stay out of an individual conference. Also, some ASCII art is quite good,
if it isn't tearing a conversation apart.

I have a pretty big ascii library in my home dir. I'd be more than happy
to unload it all into a conference. that's why i proposed it in the
first place.
I'll fw it, no problem.

Scg- good point. I've just been made so sick of it from all the
idgits in party that disrupt things with it. Maybe if I got to look at
it on *my* terms, it would be better.

I might not "adore" it, but I sure would be interested in
seeing the art, and knowing how it is done. I think I would
_like_ the conference.

Arnold -- kentn had the faq to an ascii art newsgroup around here
at some point. If you're interested in how ascii art is done, that's
a goldmine of information. Lemme see if I can find the filename...
Found it! Try "!more /u/kentn/fonts/ascii.faq" to see it.

No offense to anyone, but I am not a political person. It seems like
somehow, politics gets into almost every item sooner or later.
Would it be feasible to have a politics cf and ask everyone to keep
the political discussions there, or would it still be a major factor
all over grex?
I'm not downing anyone that likes to discuss politics, and I may
be blasphemous by saying I"m not really interested. It's just a
thought.

I'm not sure I understand your feelings on that. Politics is simply
the process of arriving at policy. Are you saying you are not interested
in policy matter? But conference proposals are a matter of policy, and
hence political.

Um, Rane, Brenda has a point. Once political drift starts, it tends to
take over items without having a lot to do with the item's ostensible
purpose.
Brenda, I don't think (personally) that a politics cf would do anything to
reduce political discussion elsewhere, but you're welcome to *try*. Would
you like to FW such a conference? <add BIG stupid ascii smiley face here
with tongue stuck firmly in cheek> Are you saying you want such a cf
(&, if so, does *anyone* want to FW it)? Or are you merely asking for
discussion?

The "world" conference is a politics conference of sorts.
We could *ask* people to keep political discussions in a politics
conference, but based on previous experience I really doubt it would
work.

I'm not sure which discussions Brenda is talking about...items like "who's
going to be the next prez," or items that drift into idiological debates?
If it's talking political discussions in Agora, I don't think people should
even be asked to move those discussions elsewhere, as it's supposed to be a
general purpose conference. But that's probably not the intent...could you
give some example (or hypothetical) conferences/items? Also ditto #141 :).

I had to back up and reread #138 to figure out what brenda means by a
"political discussion" - and I still don't know. There are congressional
politics, grex politics, archery politics, gardening politics, ASCII art
politics....any human endeavor in which decisions must be made involves
politics. So, what's the proposed topic?

I really meant politics as in: discussions about our government. I'm
not averse to talking about the government, but it seems to worm its
way into lots of items. I guess there's really no way to avoid that,
since the government is there, and there's plenty to complain about.
It just seems that sometimes I'll be reading an item about something
entertainment-related and all of a sudden it turns into a discussion
about our government or the people who comprise our government. It's
not a *bad* thing, just not appropriate for the item.
As I think about it, a politics cf wouldn't do any good, becuase what
I'm talking about is just drift. But it's drift that drifts in a
predictable direction :)
So forget the whole proposal- I see that it wouldn't make any difference
really.

FWIW, the world cf has been the "polarizisation conf". I'd like to restart
it with a new co-fw.

Probably the best approach to drift is to make comments that are on-topic,
ignoring the drift. Especially if they are good comments, and provoke
responses, the drift will die out.
