Thanks. They are very comprehensive, aren't they? Couldn't find
anything about metronet itself, though. How will the public obtain
access to them, when MichNet clamps down? Dialup to MichNet? (I
telneted to Which Host?, but they are shutting down that link on
2/15).

(See item 95 for a description of the changes MichNet is going to be
making this summer. Metronet will still be able to provide public access,
if they want to pay for it. The free ride for them is over. It remains
to be seen whether the free ride for their users is also over)

Who (and how) is metronet managed, and how is it supported?

Metronet is out of the Farmington Hills Public Library, and is also supported
by Southfield, Bloomfield Hills, and Canton. It is totally run on tax dollars.
This is primarily all I know. For further info, call: 810-553-0300, and
ask for the reference desk.

how's the msu-gopher doing from an SCP?

I am rather upset that Michnet will be charging for all access soon. The
date I've heard is March 1st. Michnet provides my *only* metheod of
accessing the Internet. Commercial services are out of the question
because none of them have local dialups, except through Michnet. There's
no way I can afford to pay long-distance charges on top of access fees,
and I can't afford the #35 a month. Once again, the Internet is being
limited to the rich and the students; the rest of us are out in the cold,
apparently. I know several people in this area (Alma) that are going to
be without Internet access after March 1st.

Sorry, typo in my last message. The date that Michnet will terminate
free service is March 20th, *not* March 1st. At least, that's what I was
told...it's mostly a rumor. I wish Michnet would post something under
'Network Announcements' so we could be sure, but apparently they don't
care about anyone who doesn't pay.
In any case, March 20th needs a nice name. How 'bout 'blackout
        Monday'?

March first most certainly is not the day for free access to end. That's
coming sometime at the end of the summer. Anyway, I've heard rumors that
Metronet will still pay for people to be able to access it, so there may
yet be hope.

I wish they weren't charging. It will stop people from joining. I joined
Grex just minutes ago and I might have to quit becuz of the new charges.

It is after March 20 now... is access through MichNet still free?? Any
updates (oops) on other Michigan access cut-offs?

response 137 of 142: Mark Unseen   Mar 23 06:11 UTC 1995

I'm not positive, but I think MichNet decomissioned some of the outlying
access numbers to Which Host? prompts, providing NAS dial-ups in their
place. Access is still free from Ann Arbor, but I'm curious about any
updates as well.

Our michnet in gaylord is still free and I get through with mlink or
metronet. Anyone know why msu-gopher now asks for password? also,
why can we no longer access cyberspace.org directly, now says "Access
controlled".

response 139 of 142: Mark Unseen   Mar 24 18:28 UTC 1995

I'm on right now from mlink through msu-gopher (no password requested)
MichNet does deny direct access to grex (not a MichNet host) but msu-gopher
still carries grex under its freenet menu.

Yeah, and msu-gopher is still accessible through internet but,for some
reason, not fromthe MichNet host prompt.
