is there any reason why an regular user needs any more than two telnet
connections going at a time?

Re #s 113 & 114: I sometimes read a response in one window and write my
response in another when they are separated by some distance.

Is there an item in which we are supposed to ask for programs to be added to
grex? I would like antiword (to convert doc files to text so we can read them
here) and an rtf convertor such as rtf2html and pdftotext. People keep
sending me stupid formats of email. I got one yesterday with text, html, rtf,
doc, and pdf in it. I ftp'ed the files to freeshell to use their programs
(but could not find pdftotext there).

You can use the screen program to do multiple things in one telnet
session. But I agree with Dan, increase the number of ptys.

screen isn't magical, it requires a pty for every :screen you create.

It's true that it requires ptys but I still think screen is magical.

Screen was magical back in the days of dial-in before PPP or even SLIP,
although it still did not measure of up to "uw", a superior windowing
program. The chief advantage of uw was that switching between screens
didn't require re-sending the entire contents of the new screen, which
was a big deal when you only had a 2400 baud modem.

I find the "-h 9000" option magical for scrolling back and cut&paste.

New users have now been deprived off offsite mail privileges temporarily for
just over 4 months. Is anyone actually working on a solution?

Sindi, I dont know how much the staff is working on this issue but I
dont imagine that anyone is currently devoting much time to it. I would
rather we were able to offer offsite mail to all newusers and that is
ultimately the goal as I understand it. In the mean time, we can
probably get staff to restore privileges to an individual if you have a
particular user in mind.

I commented because the motd has a message (I think posted by Cross, not sure)
about offsite mail privileges temporarily being suspended, dated Jan 11. This
does not make grex look very good when someone logs in. If there are no plans
to restore mail to new users, say so instead. One new user, perch, went off
annoyed after talking about this for a while in coop. He was interested in
helping set up a spam filter at grex and knew a lot about spamassassin. We
exchanged a few emails. 'restore' is not the correct word for giving mail
privileges to a new user who never had them.

Maybe I should ask bhoward if he has time to work on mail quotas.
