Was that just a guess to eliminate some letters, Kent, or did you have enough
clues to think that might be my word?

More than enough clues, I think, though most were zeroes... Most
of the vowels were zeroed out, leaving mostly U's and O's. So...
it wasn't too hard to fashion 'flummox' out of what was left.
I'll try to have word in mind next time.

Okay, I'm thinking of a seven-letter word, at it's not:

  flummox  0  (The last word)

A summary of guesses on this word is at ~kentn/letter.match7

gorings ;}

(I was thinking: nominal plural of "to gore," as in "The matador experienced
several bloody gorings during his bullfight, and barely lived to tell the
tale." but I also found:
  Goring \Gor"ing\, or Goring cloth \Gor"ing cloth`\, n., (Naut.)
     A piece of canvas cut obliquely to widen a sail at the foot.

Probably the original source... (Yep, they're running a dict server):

From Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913) [web1913]:

  Goring \Gor"ing\, or Goring cloth \Gor"ing cloth`\, n., (Naut.)
     A piece of canvas cut obliquely to widen a sail at the foot.
