Trying to ssh in, after I enter my username & password, I get:

This has been happening pretty persistently.

Seems like if the number of ttys can't (won't?) be increased the idle
killer should be set to something reasonable...maybe 6 hours?

I have not been able to ftp from my computer to grex with kermit/ftp or wget.
After a very long delay, I could ftp to freeshell (the second two files went
right away). Maybe I should have waited 1-2 minutes to ftp directly.
Nor did a mail I tried to forward to freeshell (because it had filled my
mailbox with about 800K) get there in 5 minutes.

Why is the the system not sweeping these (apparently) dead connections?

I mean... 2 & 3 days "idle"? Sounds dead to me.

is there any reason why an regular user needs any more than two telnet

Is there an item in which we are supposed to ask for programs to be added to
grex? I would like antiword (to convert doc files to text so we can read them
here) and an rtf convertor such as rtf2html and pdftotext. People keep
sending me stupid formats of email. I got one yesterday with text, html, rtf,
doc, and pdf in it. I ftp'ed the files to freeshell to use their programs
(but could not find pdftotext there).

You can use the screen program to do multiple things in one telnet
session. But I agree with Dan, increase the number of ptys.

screen isn't magical, it requires a pty for every :screen you create.

response 122 of 333: Mark Unseen   May 12 16:46 UTC 2006

It's true that it requires ptys but I still think screen is magical.

response 123 of 333: Mark Unseen   May 12 17:04 UTC 2006

Screen was magical back in the days of dial-in before PPP or even SLIP,
although it still did not measure of up to "uw", a superior windowing
program. The chief advantage of uw was that switching between screens
didn't require re-sending the entire contents of the new screen, which
was a big deal when you only had a 2400 baud modem.

re #122
It's true that it requires ptys but I still think screen is magical.
I find the "-h 9000" option magical for scrolling back and cut&paste.
