I move that we leave things just as they are. Handle silliness case by case
and not have a commitee or a board member or whatever all the ideas have been.

Agree.

I second the motion (or third it fi you count remmers' agreement... :)

having served on such a committee as suggested by kerry and described
by slynne (I don't believe I share her perception of the committee or
its usefulness, BTW), I agree with chelsea, davel, remmers, dang,
arthurp, et al.

May I throw in my agreement with carson? Thank you.

Kerouac, there is no cause for what you have proposed, in my opinion,
and don't begin to presume your opinion will change mine.
Moreover, as a former FW, I find the whole concept offensive. Go
have your own conferencing system, if you are so ill of this rather
decently (and INDEPENDANTLY) run one.

Actually, I'm tired of the term "fairwitness" Let's call 'em something
else. Maybe "consuls" if you want to elect them in pairs, and they're
sposed to get along and all.

I disagree, meg. "Fairwitness" has a Middle English ring we should nurture.
I hear troubadours, lutes, and smell the earth and the vines. And stone.

I think of Heinlein, myself.

(aruba is, of course, referring to the person who coined the term.)

I know where it came from, it's just that after eleven years, I am
looking for a new term.

"Concierge"?

davel
response 116 of 143: Mark Unseen   Apr 26 10:05 UTC 1996

I think a FW can call himself or herself most anything he or she can get away
with, & conference login screens vary in their descriptions. Things like
Picospan help files could be changed to say something else. But I *think*
the term is coded into Picospan, & getting that changed probably would involve
getting the author's cooperation. Which might not be all that difficult if
it were for a compelling reason, but for reasons of taste?

Personally, I'd never have used that term, but I also don't think it's worth
bothering with.
scott
response 117 of 143: Mark Unseen   Apr 26 10:52 UTC 1996

Is that term hard-coded in PicoSpan? I doubt it, for commercial reasons.

Marcus?

I don't have read access on the binary, but such messages as "You are a
fairwitness in this conference" seem likely to be coded in.

(But, yes, Marcus is the one to ask.)

Arnold, by this late date, it's just about true that if you can imagine a
NIC-registered name, somebody's already registered it.

It's worse than trying to name a business, even worse than trying to name a
rock band. ;)
