You and I are more hesitant...and maybe a few other longer-time users...
but we're a minority.

Agora is someplace that I won't go, because, even if I forgot
all the STUPID items, I'd have a hell of lot more to forget the next
time, due to how fast they are entered.

Beats having to forget formerly non-stupid items. I'd rather know up
front. Not that this has anything to do with the name of the
"New Grex Newsletter."

Top five vote-getters for newsletter name are
Respond or Pass 21
Drift 17
Tales from the Dungeon 17
Breakfast Food of Champions 15
The Grex Connection 15
All other candidates received fewer than 15 votes.
Since the votes are publicly readable, you can verify the results.
A simple way to display the counts is by entering the command
!cat /var/spool/votedir/board/votes/* | sort | uniq -c
You'll see a list of abbreviations for the various name candidates
with a tally of the number of votes received by each. To decode
the abbreviations, do
!more /home/remmers/candlist
(Omit the ! from the commands if invoking them from a standard Unix
shell.)
If a candidate doesn't show up in the tally produced by the first
command above, that means it didn't receive any votes.
I believe the plan is to have a runoff vote among the top 5?

I haven't EVER read Agora; seeing the size of it, I (rightly) figured I'd
never get through it, and decided to start by going for a cf that looked like
it would fit my interests. I started reading coop when there was a specific
issue of interest to me to be discussed here mentioned in the motd, and I have
been an active participant there ever since (except for the summer), even tho'
I, too, am not a member. I have had a few of my suggestions taken up, even
as jep has, and have usefully (I hope) summed up others' positions on
occaision. My personal take on Agora is that any item that applies to another
cf ought to be linked there ASAP, and Agora's access to it CUT OFF, leaving
only a note as to where it went. Then fw's can try to keep it vaguely "on
topic", and Agora readers will have time to hit coop and the cf's that
actually focus on topics of interest to them.
(By cutting off Agora's access, I mean to disallow reading/adding NEW
responses, but leave #0 and other early responses there to pique the interest
of passersby in going to the cf's that address their interests)

Mark, join agora, and immediately enter fixseen at the Ok: prompt.
That tames it. The next time you j agora, you will see a small,
select, group of seasoned responses.
I don't like killing the item in agora just because it has been
linked elsewhere, but I always forget it in one or the other
(depending on whether I'm only interested in seeing how it plays
out this season, or want to continue in the topic). [Entering
forget at the RorP prompt does what you want - cuts it off, but
only for you.] However I do like your idea that, if extended, suggests
that just before agora is to end for a season, that a list of all the
topic continuations - the links that had been established - be
posted. You can't tell from the header <linked item> where it has
resprouted, but that would be useful if you really want to follow it.

Why SHOULD I join agora? I ahve enuf trouble keeping up with coop and iq !!
I am, in fact, behind in coop now. And I can't stand reading just the last
half of a conversation in a format like this. There are constant references
to what went on before, and I really feel lost when ppl talk about the part
of the conversation I missed. So fixseen is a good sol'n for some ppl, but
it just wouldn't work for me.

The reason to join agora is to participate in some of the really
cool items there. Right now we seem to have a glut of neat things
there.

remmers has set up the FINAL ROUND vote for the name of the Grex
newslette - the candidates are listed in #103 (and in the vote program).
Type vote or !vote (depending on shell) to run the program. Voting
is open to all users and will run until 30 November.

As with the previous runoff vote for the newsletter name, I've
made the vote directory world-readable, so you can just look
in and see who's voted for what. The directory is
/var/spool/votedir/board/votes.

It would appear that those are standardized abbreviations for the
various titles..

Right--when you vote for a particular name, what's actually
recorded in the file is the abbreviation. (I'll leave it as
an exercise for the reader to figure out why I'm recording
abbreviations rather than full names, and why I'm bothering
to display the abbreviations to the voter.)
Since we're voting, I suppose it's fair game to discuss our
name preferences in the hopes of swaying popular opinion. I
like "Respond or pass" because of its unique Picospan
associations and the way it suggests Grex's primary reason
for being. We might run into legal problems with "Breakfast
food of champions". "Tales from the dungeon" sounds like the
name of a horror fanzine (and besides, Grex might not always
reside in a "dungeon"). "Drift" is what we do too much of.
"Grex connection" isn't so bad and has the distinction of
being the only candidate with the name of the system in it.
I still prefer "Respond or pass" though.
If we pick a name that doesn't have "Grex" in it, I strongly
suggest that "The Grex Newsletter" be adopted as subtitle and
prominently displayed on the masthead.
My two cents.

Re #116: As a member of the "editorial board", I support your proposal to
add "The Grex Newsletter" as a subtitle to any title not containing "Grex".

I'
I'll fourth John's reccomendation.
"Tales from the dungeon" is a play on the "Tales from the crypt" title.
Reflects grex's strange location.(Which john is right, may not be permanent)
and is weird enough to attract people's attention. (BTW, if you think there
arn't certain "horrific" aspects to this system you've been sleeping in
class again john. :-) )

So which Grex staffer will have their likeness used for the
character of the Dungeon-Keeper?
"Hello, kiddies, time to get a GREP on yourselves, before
the daemons come out and scare the chsh out of you!
HEE hee hee hee!"
OK, something like that...

I just think that "Tales from the Dungeon" will feel a bit limiting, and also
might not be particularly enlightening about WHAT, exactly, it is. If I saw
"Tales from the Dungeon" on a two-page flier, I would think that it was a
collection of horro stories, or an advertisement for such a book or periodical
