Let's just all pretend that I never created this item.
Let's just for get that there is a Northern Michigan
I'm sorry for ruffling feathers trying to organize something this large.
Just chalk it up to 'the new kid on the block' trying to share with others.
Maybe grex isn't ready for a full spanning convention.
Remmers, I'm sorry you see me that way.
To all on here that I may have been impatient with. . . my apologies. This
project was very important to me for some reason and I probably lost my
trademark sense of humor a few times.
Enjoy whatever you come up with for plans, I hope to meet some of you in the
future.

Well Kenn, I certainly have apprciated your enthusiasm to get something
done. When I am in Gaylord, I'll have to look you up.

Kenn, I think you were expecting too much of this communications medium
if you thought things would jell as definitively, rapidly, cleanly, and
unclutteredly as you seemed to want them to. Heck, we have long
discussions about what restaurant to go to after the Saturday walk.
But let's not stop talking about ideas for a convention.

The idea of a grexpedition to Gaylord when the weather's nice sounds
neat. I've never been there, and I'm getting a sense that there are
some interesting folks living in that area.

I'd be *going* through Gaylord tomorrow if my RI and I were
going north as originally planned. :(

Steve, let's do that soonish.

for?)

I think reading through the whole thing gives you an idea of the drift to
inactivity. I think everyone's focus is on the move. Focusing of energy
elsewhere. I think this will be more active after things settle down.

No Kae Anne, the idea hasn't been abandoned, but it was made clear by some
that my input/leadership or whatever wasn't welcome, wanted, or appreciated
so I bowed out of the item.
Refer to earlier items for the progression of this.

I belong to a large national organization (well, 15,000 +/-) that holds
annual Conventions. Proposals for these are solicited a few years in
advance. The conventions are run entirely by volunteers, which makes costs
low - camping is always provided. Anyway, the chapters submit proposals,
and the board chooses among them. Only one can be chosen per year, so some
must be postponed - rarely, the proposal just isn't satisfactory
(inadequate facilities, for example). In general, the proposers undertand
all this, even though they might be disappointed that their proposal was
not accepted for the year they wished. But *noone* is considered
unwelcome, unwanted, or unappreciated. It is just that a collective
decisions must be made on the basis of the "greatest good", as judged by
those elected to make such decisions. I would suggest that something like
this be tried, where any group of Grex users that want to host the first
convention sketch out a tentative plan (location, facilities,
accomodations, food, activities), and submit it for the users to review
here and the Grex board to consider at a subsequent meeting. A "due date"
for proposals should be set, so they are all considered simultaneously.
Would this be a practical way to proceed?

I think the term "convention" sounds ominous and scary. Another problem is
the sanction by the Grex board as was discovered in the Newletter item.
I would think a Grex weekend with an open invitation to Grexers would work
nice and wouldn't require sanctioning. What if we had a Grex weekend with
a bike tour and hiking or whatever. That would make it mo informal. I wonder
how many people would attend something like that?

response 120 of 259: Mark Unseen   Jan 16 23:58 UTC 1995

Probably a significant number, if the timing was good. Folks have been
known to drive hundreds of miles just to attend a Grex walk.

Call it a "conference" if you don't like "convention". But I don't
think many people would be scared by "convention" - SF fans have
"conventions" all over all the time, as well as almost any other group
of people with a related shared interest you'd care to name.

response 122 of 259: Mark Unseen   Jan 17 01:12 UTC 1995

Why don't we call it the "Grex Gathering?"
steve
response 123 of 259: Mark Unseen   Jan 17 01:46 UTC 1995

We can call it several different things Andy. But it will resemble a
big party, and for SF folk, the word "con" means just that.
Its likely that the closer we have it to Ann Arbor the more people
we'll have.

response 124 of 259: Mark Unseen   Jan 17 14:57 UTC 1995

Up north here we'll throw the party and invite you southerners (of course
a small fee might be in order).
