What's new, Kent? That makes twice I've been ignored on my own item.

whine (I can guess again, can't I, since Kent guessed, or do I have to wait
for a response?)

The powers that be: I now have three unscored guesses: again, break, whine

I'd say go ahead and guess...I don't believe your "again" guess was
out of place when it was entered, and you shouldn't have to pay for
the scorer's error, even if it means the appearance of two guesses in
a row when your "again" guess is finally scored.

sorry all, I haven't been able to get on for a while -- my local Merit
# is out of order or something. And, apologies, Paul, I don't know how
I missed "again." Nothing personal, really!

I tried to chmod letter5.match, but did something wrong.
I will, however, update the guesses and try once more to
chmod the file.

OK, the permissions are set now.
/u/jshafer/letter5.match contains an updated list
of guessed words. I probably won't be back to check
on this until Monday or Tuesday, unless Merit gets
fixed before then.

it looks like you set the 'x' bits instead of the 'r' bits
try this:
chmod 644 letter5.match
next chance you get.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

BTW, is there anyone out there?

response 112 of 1034: Mark Unseen   Sep 21 17:34 UTC 1994

Good. That makes more sense. I think we're still here, but me, I'm
waiting for a response so I can guess again. If someone hasn't
responded in a long time, do what you did, which was to respond. That
way the item will show up for those of us reading this conference.
Otherwise, "out of sight, out of mind".

You should be able to (in the current case) type
       !cat /u/jshafer/letter5.match
(The summaries are very seldom more than a screen's worth of lines,
so cat works fine; you can use !more if you prefer).

Alright, well, I have no idea how to keep a list of words guessed, so just
well... deal with it.

I'm thinking of a word......

response 117 of 1034: Mark Unseen   Sep 22 04:28 UTC 1994

Don't worry anne, you'll get plenty of help. For starters, instead of
counting the matches yourself, you should let the computer do it.
When there are guesses posted next time, try this:
at the respond prompt, type !awk -f /u/srw/match.awk
This script will prompt you for your secret word, and then for
each guess and guesser. It outputs the lines the way they should appear
in your response. When you have finished, type . on a line by itself,
and you'll be back at the respond or pass. Now respond, and then
use your computer to copy and paste the responses.

Now kent has an even slicker system that uses my awk script to
maintain the /u/anne/letter5/match file, but I'll let him tell you
about that.

anne, srw's awk script is great. The only problem I found in using it
was that there was still much handwork to be done in terms of cutting
and pasting and building a summary file. I have a shell script whose
heart is srw's awk script, and it also does the following:
    - lets you abort your awk script output if you made a mistake
    - saves your current batch of guesses & results in a file you can
copy into a conference response (saves typing)
    - creates the letter5.match summary file in your account with
the proper permissions so everyone else can see it
    - appends your current batch of guesses & results to the
         summary file
    - maintains a backup file of the previous state of the
letter5.match file in case you discover an error after
         you've already updated letter5.match
For the 5-letter match game, you can use /u/kentn/do.lm5. It's readable
by all, so if you'd rather copy it to your own home directory (if you
don't trust me to not make nasty modifications to it) you can.
Otherwise, at the "respond, or are you puzzled?" prompt, type
    !/u/kentn/do.lm5
You will be prompted first by srw's awk script, and then several more
times (to give you a chance to abort). I'll e-mail you a sample run
so you can see how it works.

anne, I sent you message about my script. If anyone else is interested
I can send the message to you, also.

response 121 of 1034: Mark Unseen   Sep 22 21:42 UTC 1994

(I've just spent some time updating the do.lm5 scorekeeper's script
for this 5-letter game. Hopefully, it will make a bit more sense
when you invoke it now. I've included instructions for using srw's
match.awk script, which do.lm5 runs, and some explanation of what to
expect from the script. Oh, and a banner title so you hopefully
won't confuse do.lm5 with the 6-letter version. You can try the script
from this item's respond prompt by typing: !/u/kentn/do.lm5 )

Oh...and have we come to a consensus regarding the name of the
summary file for the 5-letter game? letter5.match? letter.match5?
Let me know and I'll change do.lm5 to reflect the desired name.
