If a Japanese person who has been trained to read the Roman script were
to pronounce the word as spelled, another Japanese person would have no
trouble understanding them. Ditto for me, because I know how the word
is pronounced in Japanese. It is not the spelling which lacks any necessary
information, but rather your knowledge of Japanese which happens to be lacking
(that not being meant as an insult, of course).

I have no argument with #109, which also does not contradict my #90.

Technically, by the time stamps and all, Rane wins. However, since
carson was within five minutes of the winning entry, I'd say he probably
was doing what I did a while back...sitting there thinking and
scribbling on a piece of paper. So, since carson has been trying
so hard and visibly improving at playing this game, I thought it
only right that he should see his name beside a "6". I'll leave it
up to rcurl whether he wants to share the prize or not.

(hmm... Picospan never told me that a response slipped in, much less two!)

(I spent a good hour looking for dictionaries in an attempt to find a
six-letter word with the stem "kim***". I went through the following
dictionaries, none of which had the word "kimchi" within:)

Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary (1961, 1980)
American Heritage Dictionary, 2nd College Edition (1985)
Random House College Dictionary, Revised Edition (1982)

(before finally finding the word in:)

Webster's *Ninth* New Collegiate Dictionary (1991, emphasis added)

(the next word is rcurl's. I chalk this up as a learning experience, i.e.,
learning which dictionary to look at first.)

(I'll be happy to make the second guess, after kentn's "kimchi".)

Okay, then I'll guess "kimchi" (I found it in my Web 9th New Coll,
but fortunately for me, that was the first dictionary I looked in).

(and it was my guess of "kimono" with srw's "uphold" that gave it away.
remember those days? ;>)

Yes it was "kimono" that gave it away, and I did feel like a bit of
a "thief" with the door standing open like that. It was also my
Webster's New World (Second College Ed) that had kimchi. Well, onward:
