    insular 5 (gelinas)
    bellows 0 (albaugh)
    itching 1 (aruba)
    insulin 7 (kentn)

And we have a winner! The word is

  insulin
noun: a protein pancreatic hormone secreted by the islets of
Langerhans that is essential especially for the metabolism of
carbohydrates and is used in the treatment and control of diabetes
    mellitus

Congratulations, kentn.

gelinas: Oh, but zero-score answers are equally important: they reduce
the alphabet. For example the theorem `monitor' excludes `insular'
from the solution set, even though the second has a higher score.

Now that I think about it, my guess is that you need a rather small set
(four, five?) distinct zero-score words to perform a statistical analysis
and come up with the most likely answer. That is even without using
a dictionary.

Okay, I'll try to have a new 7-letter word in mind when next I'm
logged in.

The more you play scrabble, the better you get.

Yes, I understand the value of zero scores. I just don't see the leap
from
        -ssho-- (1)
and
        isthmu- (1)
to
insulin "guaranteed seven" which kip announced.

I _hoped_ "insular" would score two, but I would not have been surprised
by a different score.

Ah well. I'll just be satisfied with my occasional win.

'insulin' was just a guess that happened to fit the previous clues.
I had no idea that that was the word--certainly not "guaranteed".

Anyhoo, I'm thinking of a seven-letter word that is not

  insulin 0 (The Previous Word)

The guess summary is in ~kentn/letter.match7.
