Without diminishing the credit to Steve - that's what several have
been saying (several times).

If they're coming from ohter systems, then like as not they'll know
how to navigate and one of the first things they;'ll do is set up
a .cflist... ditto for returners...
and for psuedos...

One option would be to give all new users a .cflist file that says just
"intro" in it, and then in intro tell people to type "!rm .cflist" when they
are ready to default to the agora conference, instead.
The WELL has an intro type of conference. Would it make sense to talk to
WELL users and admins about how this works for them, and to see if they
have advice?

I think that would be an *excellent* idea, Valerie! And I like what you have
to say about the !rm .cflist, too.

I've never been on the WELL, but from what I hear they have sort of a
read-only conference that tells you how to use the conferences. You can't
enter new items or respond to anything, and the only items there are about
conferencing. From that conference you can go off to any other conference
on the system. I don't think they have a general conference, only specialty
conferences. But, never having been there, I could have my facts way wrong,
I dunno.

If Intro becomes the default conference for all new grexers, experienced or
not, then make sure to have an item (#1, e.g.) that explains how to
quickly get into a more sophisticated conferencing environment.

Glad to hear it robh - it would be beneath me (my experience) to actually
visit Intro & check it out! :-)

(This may not be the proper item for this, but...)
Just wondering why the prompt for joining a conference not in your .cflist
doesn't include the "observe" option...

Dunno, but it works anyway. Type "observe" and you'll join the
conference in observer mode.

Because it's not configured that way, obviously.

I seem to remember that it was decided to leave it off, on the grounds that
it was really unnecessary. If you don't want to post, by all means don't
post. Otherwise, it saves you needing to reread items to respond to them.

(Hmm. I see that John slipped in and Picospan didn't tell me.)
