Some people on Grex have put down the use of smiley's and the like, but I
think that without some way of conveying mood, the printed word here gets
misinterpreted too frequently. Communication is so much more then words and
this medium has limited the full range of expression unless we use some method
for conveying emotional intent (like sarcasm, anger, humor, slyness etc.).

You mean something like" "Would you like to step outside and say that, Dr.?"
;-), or :-), or "Just kidding!"?, or . . .

smilies are juust one way to tell headdoc he's just a dweeb <G> and then
tehr are other mechainisms. I read and undersand smilies, but i don't
use them - just a preference.

But there *are* necessities for empahsis, focus, adn other expressions
which might be otherwise badly misinterpreted. The most difficult
method is to be an analyist of your own typing adn devote a few
seconds, intentiionally, trying to determine "now, how many ways
can this be mis-read?" And then, rewrite it to remove the ambiguit(y/ies).

Smilies, grins, and *demonstrating* the emphasis of KEY words - or all
of the above can be used successfully.

Rob, that looks like Beeker's girlfriend (Muppet Show reference)
Try: 8)(8-< hrm... or 8)(:-< Depends on Audrey's dimensions,
I suppose (wonders if Frued were alive in the age of emoticons, if
he'd write a treatise on 8-envy, or on /-envy?)
8)(-</==    <-- male
8)(8<===    <-- female

The pundits are right, there is a breast fixation in the US. What to do,
what to do .....? Oh woe is me! Of course, it _is_ understandable. Now
how about those fixations women seem to have -- like . . . [fill in
your poltically incorrect perceptions here, please.] Your grade
will be reduced by 2 levels for every answer!

obviously my stickman doesn't have a breast fixation, Arnold,
otherwise he'd've been:

standing next to the fair 8-breasted stickwoman
(suddenly realizes this is *not* Sex II and slinks off again)
