I am also very much in favor of guest accounts. Again for the same reasons
as above. I realize that their may be technical consideration that preclude
having guest accounts implemented just now, but if it is possible I would
like to see this done as soon as we can.

The reason for my cynicism in #93 was that I saw the discussion
taking the same turn I'd seen all the previous discussions on this
issue taking: "Yeah, a guest account would be nice, but it
shouldn't be allowed to send mail or enter responses, and it's
too much work to bulletproof the account, so let's forget about it."
I found Rob's proposal refreshing because:
(1) It challenged the assumption that the account shouldn't have
access to Picospan posting or mail (always the hangup in the
past);
(2) Rob had a handle on what would be necessary technically to
implement the proposal.
(3) He volunteered to actually DO THE WORK! (Music to my ears!)
On thinking about it, I don't see why we worry so much about
bulletproofing a guest account -- people *already* can abuse
mail and picospan anonymously if they want to; we wouldn't be
adding much in the way of new opportunities there. And if
implemented along the lines of Rob's plan, it could be a useful
way to introduce Grex to the public and ease the burden on
newuser.
So at this point I feel inclined to encourage Rob to proceed and,
subject to a final once-over by board & staff, am favorable to
trying this out.

I'm still keeping an open mind on this issue. It looks like there are a
lot of good arguments on both sides.

I'd recommend that people take a look at Rob's preliminary spec --
type !more /u/ajax/guest_acct_description to view it. I'm sure
it needs some refinement, but there are a number of interesting ideas
in it; to my mind, it looks quite promising and quite, well, Grexian.

Well, from the perspective of someone who just discovered grex
awhile ago, I have to say that this sounds like a good idea. It would
have been very convenient to check out grex, without going through
the newuser rigamarole.. and I have to say that it wouldn't have
kept me from creating my "community-enriching" account, either.
