2 wrong, last 2 I didn't bother (I hate solving geometry at breakfast :) ).

The only one I didn't get is 10, and I haven't finished working on it yet.

I got 9 out of 10, but I disagree with #10. I think the solution should
be 15 degrees, answer B.

This is what I was having trouble with - #10. I got 120 degrees (!), so I
think I need to review my geometry a bit. If angle "ABC" is x degrees, which
is the vertex?k I was assuming the middle letter...

Here is the expanded answer key:

1. (C) If you're unlucky you'll get a blue and a brown sock
the first two tries, but the third try you'll have to get
either a blue or a brown sock, which will make a pair with
one of the first two socks.

2. (C) Houses that have fewer than 6 rooms is 10 (given).
Houses that have 6, 7, or 8 rooms is X (unknown). Houses
that have more than 8 rooms is 4 (given). The total is 25.
   10 plus X plus 4 must equal 25, so X must be 11.

3. (D) A church is a religious type of building as a hymn
is a religious type of song.

4. (C) There are really two sequences going on here. Notice
that the even terms make a sequence by themselves: 0, 2, 4,
6, 8... so the next term is 10.

5. (E) George Washington is only superficially known for the
cherry tree incident. John Hancock is only superficially
   known for his famous signature.

6. (B) Add B to both sides of the comparison. Since A plus B
is greater than C because the sum of two sides of a triangle
is always greater than the third side, you have your answer.

7. (C) Total number of people are:
       (a) Blonds WITHOUT blue eyes (14 minus 5 equals 9)
       (b) Blue-eyed people who are NOT blond (8 minus 5 equals 3)
       (c) Blue-eyed blond (5)
       Adding a, b, and c we get 9 plus 3 plus 5 equals 17.

8. (D) Think of the times 12:12 and 1:01, whose difference
   is 49 minutes.

9. (C) One diagonal of the square is the radius of 5, so
the other diagonal is also 5 since diagonals are equal.

10. (C) Use the fact that angle ABE is equal to 20 degrees
and angle A is equal to 20 degrees to make the triangle
    AEB isosceles.

By the way, the author of this test is Dr. Gary Gruber.
The article states he is a recognized authority on standardized
tests and critical thinking strategies.

Ugh. No wonder the nations kids are testing so low. :)

The explanation for #10, is a non-explanation. Ok, AEB is an isoceles
triangle. I still don't see how that helps.

I agree on #10. I don't see how that helps. I got all other 9 right.

What pun? ;-)
lilmo
response 18 of 36: Mark Unseen   Aug 21 22:18 UTC 1995

The explanation for #10 is bad, but the answer is correct (more later)

BTW< a church is NOT a building, it is the ppl. you can use "church" as a
adjective, to say "church building", but "church " is the ppl IN the building,
so the answer for #3 should be C, b/c a museum (some museums) contain relics.

Also, GW never DID the cherry tree incident, so that's a bad analogy anyways.

I finally solved #10, but it wasn't pretty. If anyone has a concise solution,
I'd like to see it.

My solution isn't pretty either. Makes one wonder if that was
the question they really intended to ask.

I finally wrote down #10 and am working on it more carefully. I apparently
misreaad it before, as I now have down to every angle but EDC and DEB
identified, and once I get off of Grex I'll really try to figure it out.

response 23 of 36: Mark Unseen   Aug 29 04:43 UTC 1995

If remmers or aruba could give me a hint as to their solutions for #10, I
might be able to simplify it/them.
