Coins of the Planes Mark Unseen   May 23 03:00 UTC 1997

Since this information does not exactly fit anywhere within the items already
created, I am putting it in a new one. Besides, I need ideas. This item is
a description of coin names, worth, and appearances in my Multiverse.

Coin Material (usually metal) Coin Name Gold Ratio
Ceramic (clay) "Bauble" 1/100 gp
Copper "Pfennig" 1/100 gp
Tin
Silver "Silver Dabus" 1/10 gp
Electrum 1/2 gp
Gold "Double Lady" 1 gp
Platinum "Fyn" 5 gp
Steel "Arkyne"

The gold ratio is what fraction of a gold piece each coin represents, 1/100
being one one-hundredth and so-on.

Wouldn't you just know it!! I misnamed what I've been having people call
Coppers. Coppers are still "farthing", not "Pfennig".

Do mine eyes decieve me? New items?

Fair enough--if you're going to try to ressurect this thing, I'd be more than
happy to help. :)

I've got an adventure brewing that should be more conducive to on-line gaming:
less combat, fewer ability rolls, and more problem-solving. I should be able
to have it up and running in a few days.

And now, for relevancy. If your gold coin is a double lady, 'single lady'
might be logical for the electrum coin, based on their values. Does she have
any attributes that are traditionally given to her--distinctive looking
posessions, etc? If so, these would make a good image for the 'single lady',
with the lady of pain's image on the 'double lady'.

Well, on the "Double Lady" there is only the bladed face of the Lady of Pain
present on each side. Perhaps your "Single Lady" should have a profile view
on the heads, and perhaps Fell (the Fallen Dabus) on the Tails side?

That would work too. I'm afraid I don't know enough about the planescape
mythos to be of any more help.

There's not that much to know: The Lady of Pain is the most important person
in the Multiverse, the Dabus (except Fell) are her servants, Factol Erin
Darkflame Montgomery (Sensates) and Factol Duke Rowan Darkwood (Fated) are
the two most important people in Sigil. Thats about it.

I was talking with one of my so-called friends the other day, and we came up
with what the double lady should say on both sides.

Heads: In the Lady we . . . uh . . . FEAR.
Tails: In Powers we trust?

I've also considered the Single Lady coin, although I am still not sure what
to use for its tail side, heads, will be a full body view of the Lady of Pain.

I still have to play with Ceramic, Copper, and Tin, as well.

_In_ the Lady we fear is good paralell construction, but not grammatically
correct, says the local grammar bitch. Try "The Lady we Fear" and "The powers
we trust"

You think you're a grammar bitch? Obviously you weren't paying attention to
vidar a couple years ago.

Yes, however the all caps on the word fear and the question mark after "The
powers we trust" will stay.

response 12 of 30: Mark Unseen   Oct 25 20:42 UTC 1997

Ah, the question mark _was_ part of the quote. I figured you were just
uncertain about whether or not to keep it.

Okay. Spank you for the clarification.

response 14 of 30: Mark Unseen   Nov 7 03:16 UTC 1997

Being a grammer bitch sucks. :P I mean there's plenty of gramatically
incorrect writing in liturature that's still very pretty... (Coyote's thinking
of "How Green Was My Valley", in particular...)
bjorn
response 15 of 30: Mark Unseen   Nov 7 03:46 UTC 1997

I stopped. However, it is still annoying when people blatantly ignore
or forget the easiest aspects of grammar, e.g. the case of using "your"
(the possessive) everywhere, when "you're" (you are) is more
appropriate.
orinoco
response 16 of 30: Mark Unseen   Nov 7 22:46 UTC 1997

I don't much mind it in writing, or even in conversation. I just have a few
pet peeves.

Incidentally, returning to the coin thing, are you doing anything of interest
with coin _shapes_, or are they all just round?
bjorn
response 17 of 30: Mark Unseen   Nov 8 03:07 UTC 1997

Maybe.
The Ceramic Bit (worth 1/10th of a ceramic piece) is roughly triangular.
Apart from that, I'm not sure about different coin shapes.
orinoco
response 18 of 30: Mark Unseen   Nov 8 03:47 UTC 1997

One thing I was thinking is, why are coins necessarily geometric shapes? I
mean, if a coin is going to be made with a profile on it, and it's a high
enough valued coin to merit the added effort, why not make the edge of the
coin follow the profile, for instance?
bjorn
response 19 of 30: Mark Unseen   Nov 8 14:02 UTC 1997

Hmm . . . I'll take it into consideration at the very least.
orinoco
response 20 of 30: Mark Unseen   Nov 19 03:30 UTC 1997

Another thought - does the order you've listed them in imply that steel is
more valuable than platinum? If so, why?
bjorn
response 21 of 30: Mark Unseen   Nov 19 15:36 UTC 1997

No, it implies that they're in order where I know the value. Empty
denominations are set in their place because it was convienient. However,
since I have played Dragonlance when it *was* AD&D, I have very good reason
to believe that steel is worth more than platinum - but since I don't know
that for sure . . .

response 22 of 30: Mark Unseen   Nov 19 17:43 UTC 1997

umm, why is steel worth more than platinum anyway?
bjorn
response 23 of 30: Mark Unseen   Nov 19 19:31 UTC 1997

I don't know that it is.
I need somebody's Dragonlance stuff before I could tell you that.
