King Crimson reviews.... Mark Unseen   Jan 2 15:25 UTC 1995

Well, I just got a few new King Crimson albums: Larks Tongues in Aspic,
Starless and Bible Black, and Vroom.

Larks Tongues in Aspic, by the original incarnation of the band, I liked.
Although the title tracks (lark's tongues in aspic parts I and II) were a
bit too minimalist for even my taste, the rest of the album had it all--a
good mix of their early, mellower sound, and the sound of the second
incarnation. Book of Saturdays is beautiful, calm and sad. The vocal harmony
at the end is stunning. Exiles is incredible also, contrasting the folk-like
melody of the middle section with the echoing sorrow of the beginning--a
must-hear. Easy money is a bit of a let-down after the exciting beginning, but
remains a good song, and The Talking Drum is wonderful and rhythmic.

Starless and Bible Black, also from the first incarnation, I haven't really
listnened to yet, but a review might be forthcoming.

Vroooom, on the other hand, is from the newest (third) incarnation of the band.
Several words of warning. One, the tracks are misnumbered. Two, "THRAK and
"when I say stop, continue" might be a bit too weird for some. Otherwise,
the album is purty darn good, especially "sex sleep eat drink dream".

Book of saturdays: ***1/2

You must get "Red". I think it's much better than "Starless..." and
"Larks'..." because it has more "songs".

Yep. Red.

I saw the band a couple times when Starless and Bible Black first came
out. Mid '70's?? John Wetton singing? They were great.

Just released, in fact. And I will try "Red".

Hmm how is vrooom? Are Fripp and Levin still in the band. If
it's decent I'll I'll get it... I liked the last triology ending with
Three of a Perfect Pair. Does it sound anything like that?

Well, technically, John Wetton wasn't from "incarnation 1" -- more like
incarnation 3 or so. Greg Lake (or Emerson, Lake and Powell) was the singer
for the first two albums, then Boz Burrell (who went on to be the bassist
for Bad Company) sang on at least one album.

Amazingly, I saw Crimoson Mk II at a Detroit club stop: must have been
aroun 1982. A co-worker was really into Fripp.

Oh my gosh.. I'm so excited. King Crimson fans. *big grin*
I've been trying to remember the name of an album I had that had
something about Islands in the title. I loved it.. and I've been
looking for it on CD, but no luck.

Islands in the Stream?
That might be available somewhere, like at Schoolkids. I haven't heard of
anything being out of print.

The 3rd Crimson album is called (simply) "Islands". Or maybe it's the 4th
album, I can't recall at the moment.

WOW!!! never know so many folks had th'same taste in music that i did...
Schooolkids has a lot of their albums, as does Wazooo...
Vroom is OK, but i still like 3 of a perfect 2, discipline, and beat best.
How good is their really early stuff? If it's still got the same flavor
as those three, i'll try some, otherwise i won't bother.

I would say that the "Belew" Crimson is markedly different than the Greg Lake
Crimson which is different again from the John Wetton Crimson (though the
latter two are more similar.) The "early" Crimson had more horns and
strings.

I saw the same line up around '83 at the Michigan Theatre AND at
the Second Chance. Iremember Adrian Belew stepping up to the
mike with a sly grin and saying " . . this is Red . . "
and then he took about two steps back and KABLAM they were into it

Michigan theatre in '83 was a great show, except for that drunk guy up in
the balcony who kept yelling stuff once in a while.

OK, I'm on the road, Grexing courteously assisted by Compuserve's new
telnet service...I got a copy of THRAK just before I left on Tuesday.

The review in a nutshell: Worthy of the King Crimson tradition. The
concert (I now have tickets :) :) :) ) should be great!

The more complete (but still short) review now that I am back:
TRACK sounds like a King Crimson retrospective from a parallel universe.
A lot of good tunes that sound like they come from different periods int
the band's history. Overall extremely good! .

OK, I'm going to the Michigan Theatre concert on the 10th, maybe I'll be
able to report some Grexer sightings?

I also have to give thumbs up to THRAK. It was a lot better than I
expected it to be.

Review of King Crimson concert at the Michigan Theatre!!!

It was good, real good!!! I normally don't ever get excited about
concerts, but I was about this one. It was great! It was also interesting
to see what parts got played by different people, as it is often hard to
tell with King Crimson.

The show started off with opening act the California Guitar Trio, 3 guys
playing acoustic guitars doing some pretty interesting original material
along with things like "Theme from The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" a,d
Tocatta and Fugue in D minor (!).

King Crimson did most of Thrak, along with "Frame by Frame", "Elephant
Talk", "Larks Tounges in Aspic", some stuff from Red... 2 encores,
standing ovations, *and* it looked like they were having a good time
just playing.

The light show included Vari-lites, and it kind of sucked. You'd think
they could have found somebody with a fresh interesting approach, instead
of some lame, cliched lighting moves. One interesting thing: Robert
Fripp sat on a small riser in between the two drummers, and was unlit
(although you could see him from the general lighting, there was nothing
focused on him). Now *that's* star power!
