"Living in the 80s! -or Did I really do that?-" Mark Unseen   May 3 05:51 UTC 1994

Some of us don't have to "Return to the 80s" via Retro, we lived them!
So tell us, what were your favourite music, clothes and fads of the 1980s????

My list of memories could be endless, but as far as music, I loved (and still
love) DURAN DURAN, Adam Ant, The Cure, GoGos, etc., etc. (There is no way to
list them all, that's why I wanna hear from you!) Clothes? Who can ever
forget such favourites as The New Romantic look? Or Parachute Pants! Or that
"Flashdance" off-the-shoulder look...w/japanese writing accessorized w/the
ever-popular headband! Fads? Like, Valley, remember? Fersure!

What do you remember fondly (or not so fondly)???

I started listening to music in the mid-80's. Early Madonna, Toto, Pat
Benatar, Eurhythmics, Bruce Springsteen, *Night Ranger* (anyone remember
them?), Daryl Hall & John Oates, OMD, Simple Minds, Oingo Boingo, Michael
Jackson, 'Til Tuesday, Talking Heads and others were on MTV often, not to
mention the radio, and were probably my most important musical exposure.
(whoops! Forgot Wham!, Tears For Fears, and Prince!)

re #1: You did NOTHING in the 80s? Must have been a pretty inactive decade
for you, oh lump of 80-dom! There was sooo much happening in the 80s!

Were these your favourite 80s bands or just random bands? What made them so
fun? What else do you remember of the 80s???????
carson
response 9 of 108: Mark Unseen   May 4 05:11 UTC 1994

(and Debbie Gibson! I'm SOOOOOO ashamed! oh, and Samantha Fox! And Miami
Sound Machine! and Phil Collins! and even David Lee Roth!)

The only band I 'identify' as an '80s' band that I liked personally
was the Bangles.

re#9: Ok, so certainly things from 80s NEED to be forgotten!

response 12 of 108: Mark Unseen   May 4 20:57 UTC 1994

re #8: my parents divorced, my cat died, I went through puberty, Reagan
couldn't run for a second term, Michigan couldn't win a Rose Bowl,
NWA broke up, my mother kicked me out...

do I have to remember EVERYTHING unpleasant about the 80's? I'd
rather think about all the great music! :)

response 13 of 108: Mark Unseen   May 4 21:22 UTC 1994

robh: I agree about Dolby 100%
carson: The split of NWA was a BAD THING???
Kimba and I are always talking about staging a concert at Pine Knob like
lollapalooza (sp.) but have it with all 80's bands and call it RETROPALOOZA!
Big bands like Adam Ant and Dolby would headline, and one hit wonders like
Nena and Kajagoogoo could do mini sets while the headliners set up behind
them. The retro time is ripe for such a show, anyone want to help?
Some suggested acts could be:
Dexy's Midnight Runners
Adam Ant
Blondie
Dolby
Sparks
Peter Schiller (Major Tom)
Nena
OMD
and the list is endless!

Nena!! whatever happened to her?
99 luftballons!!

response 15 of 108: Mark Unseen   May 5 01:53 UTC 1994

re #13: the breakup of NWA wasn't a bad thing... until Ice Cube's "No
Vaseline" shattered any misconceptions I might have had left about
        them, but that's drift...

response 16 of 108: Mark Unseen   May 5 04:14 UTC 1994

Has anyone heard anything about when Adam Ant's new cd is coming out? I
thought it was supposed to come out last fall. (That's why he toured last
spring!) He was/is one of the HOTTEST 80s musicians (after Duran Duran,
of course!)

Does anyone besides me think this 80s Retro thing will just get bigger???
bdp
response 17 of 108: Mark Unseen   May 5 15:53 UTC 1994

random bands... random random random.... :)

I dunno, it might get bigger based on the fact that most 90s mainstream sucks
(I mean grunge is really crappy most of the time) and that people are looking
for *good* music.

Even if it's old.

Especially if it reminds them of their childhood.

(wasn't DM an 80's band? I remember "People Are People" from 'round '84...)

DM, U2, INXS, The Cure, DuranDuran...All 80s bands that have withstood the
test of time.
carson
response 20 of 108: Mark Unseen   May 5 21:22 UTC 1994

withstood the test of time?

WITHSTOOD THE TEST OF TIME?!?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

kimba
response 21 of 108: Mark Unseen   May 5 21:52 UTC 1994

I didn't say they all withstood gracefully! But at least they haven't fallen
into oblivion like Nena, Men W/O Hats, Dexy's, etc.!

Personally I think The Cure and U2 are SERIOUS sell-outs now.
bdp
response 22 of 108: Mark Unseen   May 6 04:36 UTC 1994

(re#20: I didn't bring up DM just so you wouldn't try to insult them)
DuranDuran still exists. :) DM hasn't *totally* sold out (i.e.
concert tickets are still reasonable, they put out decent albums, etc.)
Duran Duran is sorta anti-sellout, U2 just doesn't seem to care anymore... :)

The early and mid-80's launched a spectacular series of folk-rock and
electro-trad bands in the British Isles. Unlike the first wave in
this genre, the 80's cycle had next to no distribution in the US,
so hardly anyone got to hear this stuff: The Oyster Band (who have
been making some inroads in North America), Pyewackett, the English
Country Blues Band and their successors Tiger Moth, Moving Hearts.
Those were probably my favorites. The other significant band from
the period were The Pogues, who became the inspiration for yet
another wave of bands in the '90's, but that's beyond the scope of
this posting.

I was born in 78'. i would kill for a chance to go back to teh eightin\es. not
only was it a decasde of great peresidents (yes I know, a republikan who likes
NIN), but the nmusic was smoe of the best. There was no R&B, and this was the
greatest thing. Thanx to rap, we now have MTV, and all it's shitty music.
Bring back Talking HEads, Thomas Dolby, Thompsan Twins, DEVO, old Ministry,
old c Cure, Cabriotat Voltaire, everyhing.....and to think, I was only 11 when
it was all over. How ashamed I am. I WILL NEVER GET TO WEAR A SKINNY TIE!!!
