I guess some people still go to movie theaters? Most people I know go a
copule times a year, tops. Or are people rating films they haven't seen
yet?
My favorite films I first saw in 2005 (my response, I'll arrange them my

Serenity (though to a non-fan it would be mediocre)

i don't get it? a whole movie about pants? was it filmed from the pants'

My favorite movie for 2005 was "Grizzly Man." I'll have to think about
filling out more of a list; I didn't see too many new movies in 2005.
Maybe "King Kong" and "Millions."

I mostly watch movies on DVD these days, mostly via netflix, and so
haven't actually seen an awful lot of 2005 movies yet. I loved "King
Kong" though. I'm always a sucker for a huge spectacle, and that was a
terrific example of a huge spectacle.
If I were to list instead the best movies I've seen in 2005, regardless
of release date, it'd be:
- 12 Angry Men (1957)
- A Man Escaped (1957)
- Network (1976)
- Searching for Bobby Fisher (1993)
- Man on the Train (2002)
- Tape (2001)
- Wimbledon (2004)
- Mulholland Drive (2001)
- Antonia's Line (1995)
- Random Harvest (1942)
- The Straight Story (1998)
- High and Low (1963)

I guess some of those are the exact opposite of big spectacle kind of
"King Kong" movie. "!2 Angry Men", "A Man Escaped", and "Tape" are all
very minimalistic films, with few people and few sets. "The Straight
Story" is kind of in the same category. I guess I also love it when an
engaging story can be built out of minimal elements.

Hmm, 12 Angry Men is the only one from that last besides King Kong, that I've
seen. The current release of King Kong is the only one I've seen, other than
just clips...

Heh. I have only seen "Searching For Bobby Fisher" from Jan's list. I
only remember that it was a movie about a chess prodigy. Does Arlo play
chess now, Jan?

Re #16: Ah, somebody (besides me) who really liked "Mulholland Drive."
Cool. I also liked "The Straight Story". Both films were directed by
David Lynch. "The Straight Story" is a genuine oddity - a G-rated Lynch
film distributed by Disney.
Having recently upgraded our TV to a "home theater", I've been watching
a lot of DVDs. Current top recommendation: "East of Eden" (1955),
directed by Elia Kazan and starring James Dean. Widescreen version with
the original stereo soundtrack - probably not seen in this form in
theaters for decades.

And of Jan's list the only one I've seen is "Wimbledon"- which I liked
quite a bit.
I think some of my favorite 'viewed in 2005- but not filmed in 2005'
films are "White Oleander" and "Orlando."

White Oleander didnt get very good reviews as I recall. I was very
suprised at how much I liked it when I finally got around to seeing it.
It is definately a movie one has to watch with a box of kleenex handy
though.

re resp:23 Slynne- oh yeah, most definitely a kleenex movie. I wasn't
sure I would like it- but I really like Michelle Pfeiffer, so I thought
I would give it a try. Something about it just gets to me. (and I got
the book for my birthday!)
