Thanks to the ACLU folks
|
Aug 1 18:37 UTC 1999 |
I'm thinking it would be nice to make a little thank you gift to the
attorneys who represented us in the hearing. (I believe most ACLU
attorneys are volunteers.) I'd thought of donating some money to buy
some Grex T-shirts for the four attorney's involved. We'd have to
figure out sizes and addresses to mail to.
I'm going to be off line for a week, but I thought I'd start a ball
rolling on this idea.

Except that we have a policy of not giving memberships for anything but
money.
I agree that T-shirits are not much, but we can't really compensate them
for their time and effort, and a T-shirt will get the idea across that
we appreciate their effort. Who knows, maybe they'll even like them. :)

the no free memberships policy always seemed a little odd, since there
are several grex founders who apparently have free *lifetime* mnet
patronships somehow brokered years ago when mnet changed ownership.
I guess free memberships are okay in some cases and not othes?

Different circumstances, Richard. Most of the lifetime memberships
came from M-Net's original owner, which was a very different thing.
You really need to know the history before talking of such things.

Grex has only ever granted one free membership, to Ken Ascher for housing
Grex all those years.
Anyone else want to volunteer any money for T-Shirts?

Besides, I would argue that M-net shouldn't be giving free memberships
either.

I'm pleased money is being raised from people who are donating it for
that purpose. Grex was used by the ACLU. I'm glad I don't have to help
pay for them using us.

Grex was used, to an extent, but the ACLU. They can't file this suit without
plaintiffs. Grex used the ACLU. We couldn't file this suit without lawyers.
Now, what's the impact on the two organizations if a law like this goes into
effect? Grex's activities become, for all practical purposes, illegal. We
have to shut down or risk prosecution. The ACLU, because they care about
civil liberties, will be upset. They may have needed us to pursue their
cause, but their cause was to allow organizations like ours to continue to
exist.

rather than give these guys t-shirts which they probably wont wear since
they dont use grex regularly anyway-- why doesnt grex make a donation to
the ACLU. Raise $50 bucks say, and then have Grex match it, for a total
$100 donation. Which I assume would be tax-deductible.
