i talked to dave at wwnet.
there's nothing special on the console, and he gave it a reboot.
it's up now.
i'll take a look for special log messages and such.

it's kinda strange, because it was just sitting there not responding to
incoming connections.e  telnet attempts would connect and immediately
diconnect.

time.  it desparately needs memory.
