yeah baby why don't' you kill me Mark Unseen   Nov 11 03:50 UTC 2005

I have created an item in this very conference that houses copies of about
a dozen threats made against my person, my property, or my family.

How long will Grex's members allow it to be the "Wild West" of the Internet?

When are they going to step up and make it clear that death threats are NOT
welcome here?

I propose that the membership, board, and staff adopt policies to act against
death threats made using Grex.

Seriously.

Why are death threats allowed on Grex, when fun things like Greek Week aren't?

Freedom of speech, scholar.

This is already turning into an absurd argument, but, if the definition of
free speech you're talking about predominates over all other maxims we want
to have, and it includes the right to make grievous threats against a person's
self, family, and property, free speech simply isn't something we want to
have.

When will Grex do more to protect its law-abiding users?

Scholar, if you believe that a crime has been committed, why don't you
call the RCMP? You are such a bitch sometimes.

response 6 of 28: Mark Unseen   Nov 11 22:32 UTC 2005

I am not going to call the RCMP because they a) don't have authority in my
jurisdiction and b) they don't have authority in the jurisdictions in which
the crimes were committed.

I don't think I'm being a bitch by thinking Grex ought to offer its users a
system which is as free of death threats as possible, but it doesn't matter
if you think I am.

In fact, it's utterly irrelevant.

However, I thank you for your post. I am now considering contacting the local
police forces of people who have made threats against me.

Good for you. Now freeze this item.

response 8 of 28: Mark Unseen   Nov 11 22:59 UTC 2005

I'll freeze this item if Grex kills the accounts of all people who have
used Grex to threaten another user's life, family, or property.

I order for threats to be actionable there typically has to be a certain
minimal level of plausibility to them. Nobody, least of all you, believes
that two users who don't even reside in the same *country* as you, are
making threats against your life that deserve to be taken seriously.

Indeed, if you were sensible you would probably thank them. They've given
you a pretext to momentarily focus on yourself the public attention that
 you desperately crave.

I'll spare you the sugarcoating I usually put on this speech when people
come to me to complain about what others have written, and give you the
version which is stripped-down to the bare essentials:

    + I'm not your Mommy.
+ Nobody else on Grex is your Mommy, either.
+ If those bad kids on the playground said something that hurt
your feelings then you can either find a way to be friends
with them or go play on another part of the playground.
