I left M-Net because of YAPP, don't like it at all. I am happy with PicoSpan
and the way it works.
Just my two cents.

I'm curious what you didn't like about YAPP, Glenda. To me, they're basically
the same.

One of the biggest things was when it was first implemented nothing in my
.login, .logout, .cfonce, etc. would work and there was nothing or no one
online to tell me how to set YAPP up the same way. When someone did give me
help it wasn't exactly the same. I spent a long time getting PicoSpan
configured the way I wanted to use it. At the time I had 2 small children
and didn't have the time to go through it again. I wanted to be able to get
on, read my mail and conferences and get off, usually when I could get both
kids to take a nap. Getting Damon to nap at that age was a real chore and,
if I was lucky, would give me around 15-20 minutes before Staci was up :-)
I just said the hell with it for now. By the time both kids were in school
and I had time for such things I'd gotten out of the M-Net habit, into Grex
habit and had forgotten my M-Net password. Since I have a lifetime
Patronship, I wasn't going to create a new account and staff/board at that
time was less than useful when I asked for help with the password.

Trex did a quick job of restoring my account when it was reaped after I paid
for a year and did not use it for a couple of months, also got the newuser
problem fixed quickly when we were unable to sign up a friend.

I use both Picospan and YAPP regularly. The user interfaces are
nearly identical. There's some Picospan functionality I like a
little better, some Yapp functionality I like a little better,
but its all just occasionally used marginal stuff. In view of
that, I don't see that the benefit of migrating from one to the
other (in either direction) would be worth the administrative
effort. As far as speed differences are concerned, I suspect
that any such would be moot when Grex moves to faster, more
modern hardware.
A major reason for NOT switching from Picospan to YAPP is
compatibility with the Backtalk web interface, which a lot of
Grex users depend on. It would certainly be possible to
adapt Backtalk to be compatible with YAPP, but I suspect that
it would involve a substantial amount of programming because
of internal differences between the YAPP and Picospan file
structures. One thing we *certainly* wouldn't want to do
is force Grex's web users to switch from Backtalk to YAPP's
awful WebYAPP interface. If we did that, users would
be clamoring for staff resignations, and rightly so.

WebYAPP is hideous, I agree. If you have a lot of people who use your web
interface, you probably shouldn't switch for that reason alone.
I'm curious, though... can YAPP and Picospan read each other's conference
files transparently? If so, would it be possible to make both available for
telnet users?
