Setting a Date for Unveiling the "New Grex" Mark Unseen   Apr 24 15:13 UTC 1997

At last night's Board meeting I suggested that a definite date
be set for the unveiling of the "new Grex"--our new computer. The
Board didn't feel comfortable with that because in the past such
deadlines have not been met.
I made my suggestion because Grex' performance now is
s-l-o-w, and no wonder, considering we are running on only 32 Megs
of RAM! Also, aruba reported that in April so far we have taken
in only $36.
I felt that by setting a date, Grexers would at least be given
some hope, and we might see an increase in revenues.
I *still* think setting a date and publicizing it, perhaps
in the Message of the Day, is a good idea. After all, people chipped
in some substantial donations for the new machine.
What do others think about this?

I don't really see what setting a date will accomplish. The lag
on Grex doesn't bother me very much -- mostly, I think, because
I find the discussions worth waiting for.

Why put undue pressure on people by establishing a deadline?
Are that many users clamoring for increased I/O speed?

Working on tough technical issues with volunteer, part-time staff
makes it *very* difficult to meet a deadline.

Grex performance is still nowhere near as bad as it was in the
last months of the Sun 3 machine.

*Swarms of locusts* weren't as bad as the death throws of the Sun 3.

amen to #3 .............

i consider that an announced date would create an artificial threshold.

i agree with dpc that a 'preformance objective' (although those
are not his words) is a sort of goal, i do not agree that such
publicity is sufficiently valid for a grexian organization.

computer systems, while similar to a toaster, are not simple enough
to be created like toasters. birds fly from the nest when ready, or
crash when not. let's let staff surprise us.

Dave, I know that things are bad right now, given that without
the extra 96M of memory things booog doowwwwnn.

But I don't think that making a date is going to do much, other
than the fact that staff will have a date to miss. Part of our
problem is getting the right people together to do things. I think
that I can free up some time on Friday night, so I'm going to
try and work on partitioning the 2G disk on Grach. If I can, great
but if I can't, then we'll slip a little more.

Making a deadline for this really isn't going to work.

We raised a whole pile of money almost 6 months ago, in a big
hurry, to buy a new machine.
I was wondering if anyone has an idea of when this new system
will be in place.
        I'm gruntled. I'm not yet *dis*gruntled.

To be accurate, the money was collected between 1/6/97 and 3/18/97. (I'm not
correcting you, dpc, just adding some hard numbers.)

I am disappointed that the machine languishes non-functional in
the pumpkin room because no one can figure out why it won't boot
properly. I know nothing about Sun Hardware, myself.

Don't worry, dpc, it's all my fault for resigning from staff and
increasing the workload on the others. >8)

I think we should set a date by which dpc will have the new Sun
up and running. :)

response 16 of 18: Mark Unseen   Jun 27 19:17 UTC 1997

Sure. I'd be glad to go over to the Pumpkin, pick up the new Sun,
and run with it. 8-)
