Freekier...
|
Feb 27 02:20 UTC 1997 |
Ok, since I am not a shit head like that one idiot who got guest killed, I
am first posting this in coop instead of telling a staff member... Ok, there
is this account called Freekier... I believe that this is an impersonation
of my PAYING MEMBER account... I request that this login be removed or reset
or whatever you do. thank you.

Klaus, I think freek was saying his freek account is being ridiculed by this
freekier account.
The "paying member" in caps bothers me. Is freek suggesting he deserves
special treatment because he donated?
If the account is being malicious, then it should be zotted. If it's just
being satirical, even if it's not tasteful or polite, then freek should learn
to buck up and deal with it.

Hey, I'm a paying member, and I am impersonated almost daily. As
I type, somebody by the login name of "rian1" is bugging me in party.
And the finger information for "rian1" says that the name is "Ryan
Antkowiak" <sigh> this is like over 15 impersonations of me.

It could also all just be kids fooling around - like choosing freek, freeky,
freekier, freekiest, freekilly, etc. I see no harm in it, unless of course
anything malicious is done.

and Ryan certainly has more place complaining... unless ther are other kids
named Ryan taking those handles (in which case they'd be putting THEIR last
names in, not Ryan's). Freek is a colloquial spelling of a very common slang
word.

impersonation is generally not acceptable on grex. If someone (paying or not)
writes staff to complain that an account which claims to be theirs is not
actually their account, we will routinely restore the account to its
claimed ownership.

What? Steve, ar you suggesting that freek's problem should be remedied because
he's a USER of grex, not because he's a PAYING MEMBER and should be treated
special? =} You radical you. =}

That said, it would appear that freekier, unless this has changed, isn't
impersonating freek. In the cases I've seen, they had, for example, copied
the plan of the impersonated person word for word, so the identifying
onformation said that the account was owned by the person being impersonated.
This means that it can be reset so that person can get into it.

Re 8, at least from fingering the accounts, I'd have to agree. If freekier is
a making a mockery of freek, I think it's an acceptable mockery in terms of
allowable use of Grex, since it doesn't use the same name (neither account
appears to use a real name). I might be irritated (or amused) if an Ajaxier
were making fun of me, but wouldn't expect anything to be done about it by
staff, unless perhaps my name were used in the account.

Well, perhaps now you see what happens. In cases of real impersonation,
we respond quickly to complaints, in order to avoid doing real harm.
In the case of poking fun, we allow it, although sometimes people do
feel hurt by it, because it falls in the realm of free expression.
The discriminator for me is issue of whether the posted information is
deliberately misleading. In the case of the Guest account, it was
deliberately made to appear to be an officially sanctioned Grex account.
That is how scg took it - I know because he explained that in private
mail written back when he took the action.

I have a question reguarding the impersonation policy. Can anything be
done if a user claims to be me in party? Recently, this has been said
in party by a user named "crat":
crat: what are you talking about ryan... you are me
crat: but i am ryan1
Crat's finger information says nothing about me, however he claimed to
be me in party.

also Ryan. He said he was trying to say, "I am ryan!" but that he missed the
shift key.

People make silly off-hand remarks and play games in party all
the time. crat's remark sounds like typical party fare. Nothing
to make a federal case out of.
