I would be interested in this. My qualifications are below.

1. I have been on Grex since 1994
2. I am a fairwitness in several conferences
3. I am very familiar with Picospan, and vi, which I use as a primary editor
4. I have a working knowledge of Unix, and have 2 references in my possession.
5. I have a very strong background in spelling, and a desire to learn
and 6. I wrote my homepage 105 times before it was acceptable to be posted.
I know the meaning of the word nitpick. ;)

Respectfully and humbly submitted for your consideration,
Jim Reuter.

my qualifications aren't as extensive as omni's, but i'm interested as
well. i'm a fairwitness in two conferences on grex, i'm fairly familiar with
picospan, i'm a quick learner, and i spot typos and misspellings almost
automatically. i'm not familiar with vi, but i'm sure i can learn how to use
it.

As an added incentive: Whoever is picked gets a complimentary
copy of my instructions on how to be a cfadm.

I suspect a knowledge of vi is not necessary. Just a knowledge of an editor.
Vi would, in my opinion, be the best for the job, but then I use vi as a
promary editor anyway, so my opinions are suspect. ;)

[Can I get a copy of John's instructions without volunteering? I'm
currently writing an administration manual for backtalk.]

And Dan is right. Pico would be OK.

pico is my primary editor. back when i was logging on with the dumb term,
i even learned how to move around in pico using control characters because
i had no arrow keys.

I just hate it when vi does that! <barf>

[Does Grex have a version of VI installed that allows the use of arrow
keys? I always get the four one-character-at-a-time navagation keys
mixed up.]
omni
response 12 of 106: Mark Unseen   Jan 17 20:13 UTC 1997

I don't have arrow keys, either. So that's not really a problem for me.

[Re #11: Yes, Grex's vi handles arrow keys provided your termcap
specifies how to handle them.]

[I'm not sure what Valerie means by "vi doesn't use arrow
keys".]

i am willing and able to become an cfadm trainee, and would accept
the oblligation as seriously as any of the above fine ppl.

I find that vi's arrow keys work better from some termcaps than others.

If I would be seriously considered, I am seriously offerring to be a cfadm.
I know picospan well, have Fw'd a few cf's, and I am familiar with UNIX,
having been on Grex since 94.

Right, vi was designed when keyboards were highly non-standard;
the intent was that it should be usable on any keyboard, no
matter how minimal. Modern versions of vi all support arrow keys
if you have them, though.

Re #20: But the best feature of vi is that I don't have to take my hands off
the main keys to navigate - much easier to touch-type.

response 23 of 106: Mark Unseen   Jan 22 21:34 UTC 1997

Although I have not had as much experience in techie unix stuff -- scripting
and such -- as some of the other applicants seem to have had, I have been
grexing for quite some time, am familiar with mkdir and the like, and am
interested in learning more about unix. So, I would like to offer myself for
the position.

response 24 of 106: Mark Unseen   Jan 23 01:42 UTC 1997

Like orin up there, I've been grexing a while, know a good deal of pico, and
a good deal of unix, or at least enough that I should be able to handle what
this appears to take. I'm learning C++ next semester, and if I figure this
correctly, the new site is within walking, or bussing distance from community.
I'd love to do this, depending on the time. If one of the cfadms would be
willing to sign off on a CR form, I could do it during the school day (around
11-1, or 1:30) Cause I've got a free period in that time... I have a
stupendous ability to be nit-picky, especially when it comes to computers and
being in control of things. Tell me what to do, I'll nit pick it as far as
you want...
