Free Software for GREX to resell Mark Unseen   Dec 29 07:25 UTC 1996

I've just had a call offering me "a slew of legal, but archaic, software for
both PC and Mac" if GREX wants it to sell at a JCC sale. Are we still doing
JCC sales? I'll pick it up if so, but I don't want to get stuck with it if
not...

or....... keep it handy for legal adn archaic hardware donations
for the rehab committee.

in *any* event, please pick it up, yummy.

For JCC sales, archaic software doesn't usually sell well. Most
software more than 5 years old goes for free, or maybe $1 a package.
If it's still popular and is upgradeable, like an old version of
Pagemaker or Microsoft C, it could sell for a bit more. In general
I'd say "archaic" is not worth the trouble, with exceptions for
certain software packages.

Not sure about usefulness for rehab systems...depends on the
software.

A third possibility is keeping it to sell in an on-line Grex
auction. Some cheap stuff might go better there than at the JCC
sale. Shoppers at the JCC sale spend $5 or so on admission, which
can filter out some of the people who use archaic computers. We've
had trouble selling complete PCs for $5 there, while people on
Grex say they'd have paid $20 - it's a different group of people.

Depending on the software, I'd likely pay more than $5 for it. My brother
runs an archaic PC, and needs archaic software. :)

OK, I'll fetch it. (Could I store it at the pumpkin? Storage at my house
is at a premium...)

We certainly had a shortage of licenses XT- level system software, when
rehab was handling those computers. What happens to it anyway? With every
XT (type) came some system disks: we see lots of the old XT (types), but the
disks are missing. Where are they?

OK, I have 5 medium sized moving boxes full of antique software,
documentation, and general computer books. Larry would like them out of his
van -- can someone with a key help me get them into the pumpkin?

Actually, I *think* rehab equipment is stored at dang and flem's house. There
isn't a lot of free space at the pumpkin for storing boxes of stuff. Would
it be possible to move that to dang and flem's place instead?

(By the way, I have Jeff Kaplan's dead Leading Edge computer, which I'd be
delighted to get out of my apartment. Is there space for it in the DangFlem
house?)

And I still have all those old PCs in my storage cage.

Yes, there is pleanty of space at my house. I even have keys. :) When are
people free to drop things off?

Hmm. I've still got a few things I've meant to donate but never gotten around
to ...

I'm afraid Steve and I dropped the stuff off at the pumpkin several hours
before I read this. I don't have any problem with someone picking them up
from the pumpkin and moving them to dang and flem's house, though.

Actually, it's the first step. Dang now has keys to not only his house, but
the Pumpkin as well.

I'll stop by and pick them up.

Wow. Looked like five or six boxes, and actually rather good stuff. Older
versions of pretty big name software.

response 16 of 45: Mark Unseen   Dec 31 19:14 UTC 1996

Only 3 that I saw/got. Still, it's some nice stuff. I looked through it.
I haven't cataloged the books/documentation yet, but I have done the software.
The list is in /a/d/a/dang/software.txt. A lot of them are for an unknown
system. If anyone is familiar with the software, and knows what system it
is for, I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know. At this point, all of it is
sans documentation, although some might show up for some of it when I
catalogue the books. I know, for example, that there is a Borland C++ 3.0
book, although not the one that comes with it.

Most of the documentation should be there -- but there may be more to come.
The cleanup hadn't been finished when I left.

Jan (I think) was right. When I showed up to reboot Grex today, there were
two more boxes that were here. I took them home. Will cataloge later

Hey, I have a Leading Edge XT with a dead serial port. If I could get a dead
LE XT, I could try swapping out the 8250 chip. How would I go about getting
above mentioned dead LE XT?
kaplan
response 20 of 45: Mark Unseen   Jan 6 04:51 UTC 1997

My LE XT has been diagnosed as bad power supply. It also has a bad hard
drive. I think the seial port was good when the power supply went bad. I
think scg has it now. Send him some mail.

Nope, I don't have it. I think Valerie has it. Then gain, Valerie may jump
in here saying that it's somewhere else. ;)
kaplan
response 22 of 45: Mark Unseen   Jan 6 05:51 UTC 1997

Oh, and I meant to donate it to grex. So if you end up with it, please
turn over to grex some kind of money that exceeds the (admittedly low)
current value of the thing.

kaplan
response 23 of 45: Mark Unseen   Jan 6 05:51 UTC 1997

Check with dang. Maybe that's who Valerie turned it over to.
dang
response 24 of 45: Mark Unseen   Jan 6 05:57 UTC 1997

Yep, I have it. Since it wasn't mine, and I didn't know the current ownership
status of it, I had intended to leave it alone, short of seeing if I could
find out what was wrong with it. As far as I know, and I admit I don't know
much since I couldn't start it, everything works butg the power supply.
