I like the new initial messages where "Grex is the <varying meal> food
of champions" used to go! :-)
Pretty impressive uptime lately, too, for such a busy system. It's
easy to take good health for granted until you get sick, but it's nice
to appreciate it while you're still healthy!

Bringing together a really interesting mix of people from all over the place,
and from a wide variety of backgrounds.

I like the way Grex continues to want to work like a cooperative
organization even though we (technically) aren't a cooperative
organization.

Here goes...
I like the way that we/you can air an alternate view or
disagreement without either a tin-plated dictator getting upset, or
users going ballistic.
I like the way the staff (and *is* there a Borg here?) manages to
perform their duties, enjoy the system, and interact in both party
and the confs - AND _still_ have an outside life.. It's impressive
as well as thoughtful, even if it is done for enjoyment - as it
should be..
I like the way the staff responds without being condescending or
arrogant.
I like the way that "Fixed/Updated Real Soon Now" is just _done_
and not promised for months on end with excuses galore.
I like being able to respect a staff, and get some modicum of
respect in return - even when we may not agree on a policy or a
line of reasoning.
I think that not only covers most of the highpoints, but exhausts my
"like" stocks for the present ;-)

Actually, our Real Soon Now list of things that we've been promising for
months is pretty long, even though we have been getting a fair amount done.
And, who says staffers manage to have outisde lives? ;)

I think Backtalk is going to be great! The web page is where much of
grex's future activity could originate. I guess the next logical step if
conferencing via the web page is accomplished, is if something can be
setup so e-mail can be done in the same way. If folks can do e-mail
and conf'ing through the web site, many may not bother to telnet in much
at all and this place would run much faster. Is it technically possible to set
up web-based email here? If Backtalk is going to communicate with the regular
password file, surely an email variation could as well?

Hmmm...
If there is some way to participate in conferences and email
without the idiocy of the telnet protocol and reliability, I'd sure be
interested!
AAMOF, given this sort of telnet-avoidance, 'party' could easily
be supplemented with a single-node IRC and in THAT case, no one would need
to bother with telnet for almost anything..
Jammin'... Is this Backtalk and such going to be a
commercial/proprietary program or will it be distributable..?

(Re #8, #9: Heh. Web-based email is very possible, using a little
thingy known as POP3. Do you want to reconsider your position,
Pete?)

Sure... If it means the POP3 users are using their own ISP's and POP3
services ;-)

The only problem with that theory, is that http isn't actually any more
efficient in terms of network bandwidth. Actually, it's worse, because
at least, with a slow tlenet session, people figure out it's overloaded
and go away. With HTTP, there's a much larger population of people who
are clueless about overloading, that is, until it starts to not work at
all.

Well, gee. It's nice to see Backtalk being praised as one of the things Grex
does right. I feel like I have been propelled forward in a time machine,
though. Backtalk is not yet installed here. I hope it will be soon.
Re 9: Backtalk will not be a free program. It is proprietary, but it will
be made available to Grex, and will be sold inexpensively to other
public-access non-profit systems. More expensive for commercial sites, and/or
closed access sites.

What grex does right? Not terribly much, anymore. I'll come back
if I can think of something.
Once upon a time, though.. *sigh*

if you think *THIS* is bad, then return to mnet and spend a few weeks in
party and policy (let alone general) - have fun..

I like the login queue the more I use it - and as its problems get solved.
I'm glad we all agreed to experiment with it........ ;)

I love the way Grex staff responds to complaints/requests (and I like it when
other users respect staffers' rights to hold opinions of their own), the
diversity of Grex, the fact that, unlike most sites like this one, have a VERY
intellegent and technically gifted GROUP of staff members. I like the varity
of conference topics, and the changed made DAILY (and lots that most users
are not even aware of have to time) to improve Grex in general.
I also like this conference A LOT because, even though I don't always
agree with some people, everyone is allowed to speak their mind. EVERYONE.
Last but not least, it's great that the people listening to you speak your
mind CARE about what you have to say.
I could go on but it's four in the morning. Great item!!

Grex is probably the most reliable free system I've used, despite its
constant overloading. I almost never telnet into Grex and discover it's
down.

Yes...Grex DOES do good work. I enjoy the courtesy, friendly and anxiously
helpful people I've met here (and ftf), and the fact that eveyone is truly
working to the same common goal(s), even if they have differing opinions of
how to accomplish them.
Great item.
