BTW the loan to STeve is more than paid at this point, since STeve bought a
lot of stuff for Grex recently. (So really we owe him money, not the other
way around.)

I'm not sure, they don't itemize it.  We did have a check returned, though;
I don't know if they charge us for that. (The check was replaced with a good
one, so I absorbed the loss into the "member contributions" line item.)
Maybe we should have a policy of charging a fine if a check bounces? I guess
I'd rather not do that, on the grounds that people are giving us money because
they want to, and we don't need to irritate them. In this month's case, we
received the check in early September but I waited until the end of the month
to deposit it (I always do that, to maximize the proceeds for each month).
By then the account the check had been written on had been closed.

So you could argue that it was somewhat my fault for holding on to the check.

I called them. The service charge breaks down like this:

  -$12.00 "maintenance fee"
-$1.19 fee for checks cashed (about $.17/check)
   -$4.00 fee for returned check
+$10.54 credit of ((.0351)/12) * our average monthly balance

But now that I look at that, it adds up to -$6.65, which is not what the
charge was. Hmmm....

   It's cybergate! Where'd the other $2 go!

We always seem to get some bank service charge, between $6 and $14. Is
the $12 maintenance fee monthly? Does it vary based on something we do?

although it's probably not a concretely established separation, earmarked
funds are gratefully accepted and held as such. thankxx

Interestingly enough, "earmarked" donations are said to be
legally binding on the organizatio. At least in Michigan.

Um, Pete, said *by whom* to be legally binding? if that's a fair question?

re #12

Well, according to folks I've met that have done some NP-org work,
the donations to anything from Mnut to United Way can be made to
a specific "thing" or "area" (whatever).

Thus, users could say "Here is $50 to apply to the M-Net phonebill"
or "Here is my $50 to apply toward purchasing a new HardDrive".

This would mean the users expect that money spent there and they
would, supposedly, be in the right - the money would have to be
applied as the donator wished or not spent at all.

I think that's right. But, to clairify, if somebody sends us some money and
says, "this money is for the gun I want you to buy and hang up over the door
of the Pumpkin," Grex is not under any obligation to buy a gun. In that case,
we would simply refuse to accept the donation.

(note that I don't see this particular gun scenario happening, but it was an
example where it would be be very clear that it wasn't something we would
accept)
