What just happened to my account? Mark Unseen   Jan 8 11:20 UTC 2005

I noticed a funny program called "kojn" running by an account
called "smart". I emailed staff about it. I then went looking
at what it was doing. It appeared to be a password cracking
program. I emailed staff again.

The next thing I noticed was that my session was disconnected
and I couldn't log back in. The "trouble" login no longer
works too. Luckily this does.

So what the hell is going on?

Sorry for the typo, the program name was "john" and not "kojn".

I also emailed staff about this same problem and I have no trouble logging
in so your problem may be entirely unrelated.

Your account should be okay. I locked user `smart'. John is a
password cracker.

Hi Dan,

No, I still can't get in. I just tried it now - it says
"Sorry -- your account has expired." and disconnects right away.
I tried an incorrect password and it gives the expected error
message so something else happened to my account at that time.

Odd. If your account were locked, you shouldn't be able to use it for the
web, either.

Well, your shell looks okay. Joe, did you see anything weird?

Yes, I do see something weird, and I'm checking on it.

Okay, I figured you might, so I didn't investigate further.

So what's going on Joe? I can use this OK so its not my password?
Was my account's status changed in one of the system files?
I don't think my password was up for expiration. Was someone
else hacking on the system?

Joe, thanks very much.

Seems their accounts should be suspended.

Idiots?! We are at least smart enough not to forget our loginids and/or
passwords; sensitive as they are.
