Dave Cahill Campaign Statement Mark Unseen   Nov 30 22:18 UTC 2004

I'm running for the Board because I would like to help modernize the
System. I am particularly eager to see NextGrex up in a relatively short
time - with modern e-mail.
A year and a half ago, we spent over $1500 to buy the hardware for
NextGrex. Due to no one's fault, the system is still not up.
Meanwhile, we have had a serious recent decline in the members who
pay to keep Grex going. We continue to stumble along with admittedly
outmoded hardware and e-mail. Should anyone be surprised that people are
leaving?
I think the choice is simple: modernize or die.
I would prefer to modernize, and that means getting NextGrex working
soon. I hope this can be done with our existing volunteers. However, if
there are tasks which they can't handle, then we should consider spending
some of the over $3000 we have in the bank to get Next Grex running.
In real life, I'm a lawyer in private practice in Ann Arbor. I have
given Grex free legal help in the past, and will be happy to do so in the
future. Also, I was re-elected to the board of the Ann Arbor District
Library in June. I'm married, with one son and three cats.
        Please vote for me!

Dave, what do you see as the core mission and purpose of Grex, and in
what way does that influence how you think Grex should be run?

"Cyberspace Communications is a non-profit, tax-exempt corporation which
provides a computer conferencing system, called Grex, to the public.
Cyberspace Communications functions as an online democracy, with policies set
by its users. Formally, we are governed by a board of directors elected by
our members, but we have a tradition of operating very much by a consensus."

Let's address this question: Do you support the censorship of entire items
by staff members? If such an incident occurs, do you support their
restoration?

Example:
Restore Killed Items - Failed February 9, 2004
Keep Items Deleted - Passed February 9, 2004
Restore Killed Items - Failed March 11, 2004
Removing Items - Passed March 15, 2004

Next, do you support an "online democracy" or would you prefer to extend
the amount of time it takes to request voting on a motion to squelch
the democratic process?

Example:
Vote Endorsement - Passed March 24, 2004
Restore Killed Items - Failed April 16, 2004

I support what Grex is doing presently. But we should modernize
the System so that the quality of our services improves.

Yes, I support Grex as an "online democracy." I did not support
the censorship of those items, and if such a thing happens again,
I would support their restoration.

However - since this is an online democracy, and the voters make
the ultimate decision, I support the decisions the voters have already
made on the past incidents.

Do you have any objectives for Grex during your term?

Yes. Keeping the System going and improving its services will be
plenty for me. 8-)

What do you have in mind for "modern e-mail"?

response 8 of 10: Mark Unseen   Dec 3 21:55 UTC 2004

Any kind of web-based e-mail that would allow users to receive
common kinds of attachments.
