Nominations for the 2005 Grex Board of Directors Mark Unseen   Oct 20 19:54 UTC 2004

Nominations are now open for the Cyberspace Communications, Inc.
Board of Directors. In accordance with Article 4, Section d of
the Bylaws, nominations will close on November 15 and an online
election will be held December 1 through December 15. Terms of
office begin on January 1, 2005, and are two years in length.
Three seats are up for election this time around.

Any current member of Grex who has paid at least 3 months'
membership dues is eligible to run for and serve on the Board
unless they are currently serving and are completing the second
of two consecutive terms. (People in the latter group are
eligible to run again in next year's election if they are
still members at that time.)

The terms of four board members have one more year to run:
S. Lynne Fremont (slynne), Bruce Howard (bhoward), Larry
Kestenbaum (polygon), and Mary Remmers (mary). Hence there is
no point in nominating any of them.

The three board members whose terms end on December 31 are
Mark Conger (aruba), Joe Gelinas (gelinas), and Anne Perry
(mooncat). Joe Gelinas is completing his first term and is
eligible to run for re-election. Mark Conger and Anne Perry
are completing the second of two consecutive terms and are
therefore *not* eligible to run this time, although they can
run in future elections.

To appear on the ballot, a person must be nominated in this
item by November 15 and affirmatively accept the nomination
in this item before the start of voting on December 1. Seconds
are not required. Self-nominations are permitted.

I nominate Joe Gelinas, he's been great on the board and think he
should stick around for another term.

(thanks for the nomination, but I'm not eligible. :) I served my time,
I'm free damnit!! well, almost...)

Since aruba is out again (sigh - unless he is happy to be out) note that
someone from the board will have to succeed him as treasurer effective
January 2005.

The membership could vote to add an extra seat to the board of directors,
which would be a permanent board seat assigned to the treasurer. With the
proviso that the treasurer only ever votes as a board member to break a
tie. The treasurer would not vote to make quorum or for any other reason.
It would be for most intents and purposes a non-voting board position. Or
just change the bylaws to say that the treasurer doesn't necessarily have
to be a member of the board.

Inasmuch as precedent has been set and grex accepts out of state board
members who attend the meeting by telephone, I nominate Morena Timm, aka
Munkey. She runs the grexergallery.net page. can't think of anyone more
committed to this place than she is.

I regret that I can't run this time. I think the next Grex board is one that
is going to have some work to do. With Grex's revenues dipping the time has
come to make some changes, and the board is going to have to be in the drivers
seat on many of these.

I think Grex needs to move out of the pumpkin. We need to be looking for a
lower cost location with better network bandwidth. My preference of all the
options I've heard discussed would be the Ann Arbor District Library. I think
that is doable, but it is going to require quite a lot of legwork and
saleswork to get that deal done. I bet there are other non-commerical options
that might also be possible, and finding those will require even more energy.
Commercial co-location is also a viable alternative, and the deal is likely
easier to make, but still not trivial.

I still like the retroGrex idea, but it probably isn't compatible with moving
out of the pumpkin. I think if we do retroGrex we'd probably have to house
it someplace like somebody's basement. It could still be retro.grex.org even
if it wasn't in the same physical place as grex.org.

I think we also need to do some creative thinking about the services Grex
provides. I hope to be working on some of these issues from a technical end,
doing things like RSS and email notification which have a chance of increasing
usership of the conferences. But there are policy issues here too.

So I think we need a board that is more active than usual at this juncture
if Grex is going to return to a growth mode rather than continuing to dwindle.

I'm not exactly sure who the right people are. One obvious candidate,
if he's willing, would be Dave Cahill.

I'll nominate krj because well, I can't pester him about running unless
he's nominated :) But actually most who end up in Party during the
lurking hours know that krj is a fine source for learning about grex's
history, as he's been around longer than most as he's been around here for
years. He'd be a fine board member.
