This is absurd.

realugly account? killed because of copyright infringement ?

Absurd, inaccurate, and real ugly. This is an outrage.

response 3 of 35: Mark Unseen   May 12 15:09 UTC 2004

locked, not killed. It is a reversible process.

inaccurate? Did realugly, in fact, write that poem?

Is locking accounts necessary in order to censor a questionable post? Is Grex
now playing copyright cop with every post and if so what are the guidelines?
Please direct us to the original authorship work of expression which was
posted with a copyright notice, Perry Mason. This censorship stuff is out
of hand and so is the lack of attention being payed to the consistent system
lockups being produced by the bum SDSL.

So now you would like me to spend more time on this discussion instead
of going down on my lunch hour to Grex to see about calling Corecomm
about the DSL issues?

Fine.

A quick google search of a few lines of the poem brought up this web page:
http://robots.net/person/U/

which appears to contain the same poem with the following copyright line:
(Copyright 1992, 1995 by Russ Cage. All rights reserved.)

What else would you like me to spend more time on?
Because I would rather spend time making people happy with Grex than
have to respond to copyright infringement complaints, but that's part
of the volunteer job too.

Looks to me like you did the right thing, Kip. Thanks!

If you had originally posted something in the system problems item stating
that you froze the realugly account for infringement on a "Copyright 1992,
1995 by Russ Cage." infringement then I wouldn't be asking so many questions.
Sorry if I tend to ask questions when I see users get censored but its a sore
spot due to recent events.

So now you would like me to spend more time on this discussion instead
of going down on my lunch hour to Grex to see about calling Corecomm
 about the DSL issues?
Don't be so melodramatic about being asked a few questions after you freeze
someone's account without telling them or the rest of the users why it
happened. Would I like you to spend more time on this discussion? Not at this
point. At this point, I'd like you to call Corecomm and tell them that Grex
would be better off with IDSL instead of the flakey SDSL. That's not for me
to decide though so whatever you can accomplish on the DSL stuff THANK YOU!

I support Kip's actions in the matter. Persons interested in denigrating staff
should note that disabling an account is easier than finding the money for
a compatible DSL router.

I support his actions now that I have the facts. Anyone that feels I'm going
over the line by asking questions kindly go jump in a lake.

response 10 of 35: Mark Unseen   May 12 15:54 UTC 2004

I support kip's decision. I don't think staff needs to alert everyone each
time they freeze an account. I don't think staff needs to publically justify
and respond every time they do the right thing.

As I read this staff got a complaint from a copyright owner, responded to the
complaint, and is now being asked to publically justfy that behavior. Too
much red tape and too much hassle for doing their VOLUNTEER job.

I don't mind the questions, I occasionally mind the tone, but I'm getting
better at that too. :)

Anyway, I decided I was wasting too much time on this anyway, so I'm typing
this last little bit from the console with Corecomm on the phone. Wish me
luck.

Looks like CoreComm has kicked the ball to CoVaD (Is that the way they like
it capitalized?) and opened a ticket with them. CoreComm is suggesting that
CoVaD will want to swap out our DSL modem, likely within the next 24-48 hours.
They have my name and number, I told them to give me 30 minutes notice to get
the Pumpkin open for them.

I'm fairly certain I'll be inside the I-94/M-14/US-23 triangle during that
time.

Meanwhile, I'm getting out of this hot room and going back to work at the
library.

Thanks Kip. I couldn't have imagined the shitty cablecom SDSL modem was the
problem!

response 18 of 35: Mark Unseen   May 12 18:34 UTC 2004

Todd, I'm sure you must have dealt with technical support in the past. You
have to jump through these silly hoops to get to the point where they'll do
that. Besides, there was a small chance this could have been a line issue.

Anyway, I don't happen to have a spare DSL modem laying around and I didn't
see one in the Pumpkin either.

response 19 of 35: Mark Unseen   May 12 18:42 UTC 2004

We have one other DSL modem in the Pumpkin, but it's dead.

I have an IDSL Copper Mountain router that Grex is welcome to use if it will
fit the specs with CoreComm.

I fail to see why the less intrusive method of deleting the offending post
was not chosen over locking the offending user's account.

sounds reasonable to me.

Thanks Tod, but I don't believe that router will work with our type of
connection.

Can you get a list of acceptable routers from CoreComm?
