Thread Mode? Why not WikiWikiWeb Mark Unseen   Apr 2 13:36 UTC 2002

I used Grex years ago.

Now I use WikiWikiWeb because it is a hyperlinked notebase and doesn't promote
thread mode.

see: http://sknkwrks.ath.cx:1957/writewiki/wiki.pl

for an experimental Wiki I play with or.

While Grex has historical significance, perhaps it should be outmoded with
something more collaborative that doesn't promote thread mode. I'd rather see
ideas build from collaboration than to own them myself.

see: http://c2.com for Ward's original Wiki.

There are many WikiWikiWeb good systems.

No reason to promote an old tech merely because of sentimental reasons, I argue
when a better and simpler one exists unless you are a technoretroluddite.

Hm. I _like_ threads. If nothing else, things would be very different around
here without them. We couldn't complain about drift nearly so much ;)

I like threads enough that I force my email and news readers to organize
posts by thread. ;)

I think some sort of Grex wiki would be cool. Doesn't have to replace
the conferences.

Re 1: Actually, Grex's conferences are not "threaded", but "flat".

Could someone explain what a wiki is?

I went to that web page and couldnt make heads or tails of it. Haha. I
guess that makes me old.

Actually, I'd like an explanation of "threaded" versus "flat" too.

for instance, a threaded message board of sorts would allow forks on
individual replies. like, there can be several replies to this reply, and
several to yours. on a flat message board, like this one, a "reply" is really
just an appension to the item.

Hence the need for the qualification of "re: resp: xx" in a flat board
such as this.

So what's a wiki?

response 12 of 17: Mark Unseen   Apr 4 07:45 UTC 2002

it's a way of collaborating using the web where everyone can contribute
to the pages.

see http://c2.com ...

  'Wiki' is a composition system; it's a discussion medium; it's a
repository; it's a mail system; it's a tool for collaboration. Really,
we don't know quite what it is, but it's a fun way of communicating
  asynchronously across the network.
