Hi, Scott and Mark,

Yes, I spent the day tracking down details.

It seems that Corey was at an open party with TJ at TJ's place. (It had moved
over from another, smaller, apartment.)

A really obnoxious, violent fellow that (as it turns out) hadn't been invited
to the party and no one knew well, was causing trouble. TJ asked him to
leave,a nd he drew a knife on TJ. TJ (always the hero_ disarmed him and
escorted him to the door physically.

An hour later the guy returned with more knives, a baseball bat, and a friend.
TJ expected it to be the police and opened the door. The guy he'd tossed out
took a swing at him with the baseball bat. Tj ducked and went for a makeshift
weapon of his own. While his back was turned, the rest of the crowd tried
to hold both him and the other guy back.

Because he couldn't reach TJ, and Corey was in the way, the other guy and his
friend went after Corey, bashed him with the baseball bat, and then knifed
him in the back three times.

They then fled.

TJ and his friends tried to clean Corey up. (Corey was still upright and
protesting that he was OK at that point) and realized when they saw the knife
wounds and lots of blood everywhere, that Corey needed to get to the hospital.
They called an ambulance against Corey's weakening protests, whcih, as it
turns out was a damned good thing. Corey started getting shocky, and passed
out from blood loss while the ambulance made its way through a blizzard to
the nearby hospital. There it was determined that the hospital he was at
didn't have the staff and resources to handle such a serious case.

Because of the blizzard, instead of sending Corey on to a bigger hospital,
they sent to the city for a doctor with experience in this sort of thing.
Corey waited for hours, bleeding into his peritoneal cavity and was recieving
a lot of transfusions. Eventually, the doctor arrived and performed surgery
to clsoe up the wound from the inside and repair the damage to the lining of
his lung. I gather there was a second surgery, but I'm not clear on that.
Ido know that another is planned.

He was in ICU for four days and was anly released to post op this morning.
He's is, I understand, still on oxygen and has more tubes than a a chem lab.
But he is conscious, is occasionally able to eat and keep the food down, and
is able to recieve visitors.

I was even able to talk tohim for a little while.

He's got a very long recovery ahead of him ... but I think he's going to be
OK, physically, at least. I hope.

I was just thinking a few weeks ago that I hadn't heard from Corey in a while,
and was wondering what he was up to. I'm really sorry to hear about this.

I hope he has a speedy recovery. Please let him know that my thoughts are
with him.

Damon and Staci talked to Corey for 1.5 hrs this afternoon. He will be
released from the hospital in the morning. The surgery that was planned was
to remove all the tubes. He is in fairly good spirits. Both he and TJ are
having problems with going back to the apartment, which is fully
understandable. He will have to take it very easy for quite a while. Small
price to pay for something that could have been much, much more serious.

hope laotzu will be able to recover. Did they ever catch these guys who
did this? hopefully they'll be confined to a jail cell for a good while.

It sounds like associating with TJ is dangerous. Best wishes to
Corey for a speedy recovery, and I hope the bastards who did this
don't see the light of day again for a looong time.

Hopefully I can get away with a moral to the story: If you disarm somebody,
*don't* let them go. Sit on them until the police show up.

Glad to hear Corey is recovering. :)

From Corey (Damon tried to type it in as Corey told him, but the computer
froze): TJ had disarmed the guy and shut and locked the door. He went to
the kitchen to get his butcher knife and re-called the police. Corey, also
expecting it to be the police and not knowing that TJ had already answered
the door, answered it and was met with a swinging baseball bat. His martial
art trained reflexes allowed him to fend off that swing. Then both jumped
him, he was knifed and then beaten with the bat.

Damon (dea) talks to him now and then. He is healing. There is a lawsuit
that will cover his expenses (living and school, etc., medical is taken care
of by the government). He is currently living with his grandmother. He and
TJ are looking to get an apartment together as neither of them are comfortable
going back to TJ's place.

It's been a little ovber a year since Caorey was a victim of an atempted
murder. Physically, he is well on his way to recovery -- when I saw him last
autumn, the only sign (other than some terrifying looking scars) was a
decrease in his stamina, which he was working on.

That's physically. Emotionally and psychologically, he seems much more
troubled. He is chronically depressed and dissatisfied. That's made worse
by the fact that because he didn't die, the charges against his attacker were
reduced outrageously. Corey has also not been able to get any phsychological
support or emotional help through all of this. People around him seem to
expect that the emotional wounds have healed as fast as the physical wounds
and that he should "just get over it".

He has dropped out of school and so I hear from him very seldome. That's the
best I can do for a report.

Sorry to hear that, Misti. Is there anything we (those of us who know Corey)
could help out?

As far as I know, Corey doesn't even have, much less check, e-mail. I'm not
sure what, if anything one might do -- though his birthday is coming up and
a snail mail birthday card would remind him that people *do* care about him...

Thanks, Scott.

You can send it tohis grandparents' place, if you're so inclined...

His birthday is May 9 -- he'll be 21.

Again, thanks, Scott, and anyone else who decides to let Corey know he
matters.
