What to do with unwanted hardware Mark Unseen   Jan 31 07:02 UTC 2002

Grex has a lot of stuff that we will likely never put to use, and it makes
sense to get rid of it rather than pay taxes on it. Ideally we'd like to
sell it, but we'd like to get it ou of the Pumpkin, one way or another.

In particular, STeve has identified these 55 items as things he think he
might be able to find a buyer for:

Num Manufacturer name Item Description Value in 2001
--- ----------------- --------------------------------- -------------

Total $539.00

The values are STeve's estimates of what the items are worth.

STeve suggests we (effectively) give the items to him (STeve), so that we
don't have to pay future taxes on them, and he will try to sell them. (I'm
not clear on whether he would give the revenue from such sales to Grex.)
STeve's main priority is to get the items off the tax rolls and save Grex
money. He plans to get the items out of the Pumpkin, but won't do it
right away. The total savings to Grex of getting rid of them is about
$10/year in taxes.

Jan suggests that we throw the items away in a dumpster, at a well
publicized time and place, so that anyone (such as STeve) who wants them
can show up and grab them before they are hauled away. Jan's main
priority is getting the items out of the Pumpkin.

We didn't move fast enough to do anything about them for the 2001 tax cycle,
but hopefully we can get rid of them by the end of 2002.

This item is for deciding what to do with these 55 items.

If it comes to putting the stuff in a dumpster, I would rather put it in
my storage unit if STeve thinks he can find another home for it at some
point later. (I have plenty of room, and the unit is dry.)

I'm getting the sense that although the sum total of the
value of these items looks like real money the fact is that
selling them wouldn't bring very much at all, if anything.

Mostly, if someone can find anyway to put these items to use
instead of making them landfill fodder then that's great!
And when it comes to giving stuff away I'd prefer it went
to a staff person than anyone else. Afterall, they are
generous with their time and this would be but a token
thank-you.

So I'd like to see STeve take whatever of these items
he'd want, no charge, with the only expectation being they
be out of the pumpkin within a month or two, tops.

Leftover boards would fetch a small amount of money at the non-ferrous metals
place, and be cleaner than throwing into a dumpster. (ob keesan)

I don't think we'd get much for these, unless we find some obsessive collector
who wants one of everything. "Don't use 'em; I just like the way they stack
up."

If STeve tries to bring one more piece of obsolete hardware into this house,
Grex may have to find a new staff member :-)

Are these 2.1G drives the sort that fit into any computer? Please don't throw
them away if so. We are putting together computers with two drives totalling
200M. You could give Kiwanis anything that Steve cannot sell and that is
non-Sun.

The 2gig drives are SCSI. You'd need a SCSI card to use them.

   Groan.

I find it amazing what has happened here.

First, for the record, I don't want these!

What I was trying to do, was find homes for this stuff, such that we
didn't have to pay the infernal tax on them. Unfortunately, my stroke
got in the way here, and I had to push this off after I'd made my first
contacts with people about some of the Sun-3 stuff.

It isn't the case that we've not talked about this before. We have,
several times, and the thought was get it out of there.

The items were being marked as "mine" since I didn't get them out of
the Pumpkin in time. This was NOT the optimal solution for me, nor does
it make sense, but I don't want to fight people.

But at this point since we've stopped everything I want to stop this
transfer, and we'll get rid of things piecemeal this year, pay the $10
on it, but be free of it for next fiscal year.

How did the five hundred and some dollar's worth get attached that
decides our tax?

Would it be good idea to set a deadline whereby if after that point
any of these items are still in the Pumpkin they can be pitched by
any staffer willing to haul it to the dumpster?

I have no interest in taking on any of this stuff, but if it doesn't
have any use for keeping Grex operating it sounds like a really good
idea to find it a home with someone else.

If finding it a home costs too much money or effort, I would suggest
that we scrap this gear.

The listed hardware was reported as being worth five hundred and some
dollars which resulted in our needing to pay $10 worth of tax on it. Is
it really worth that money? In the real world?

response 14 of 75: Mark Unseen   Jan 31 23:01 UTC 2002

If nobody at all has any use for it among grexers, I would forward this list
to wlevak and kentn (of grex) who volunteer at Kiwanis and see what can be
used there, and then Jim and I could probably get the car running long enough
to bring the rest to Friedman's recycling if it is too large to fit on a bike.
They have been nice about taking some ferrous stuff off our hands free ever
since we gave them a free truckful of sorted computer components.

Re #13: STeve came up with all the values we reported on items.

Re #7: Does M-Net really want old Sun hardware?

Re #9: Sorry things didn't go more smoothly, STeve, but I think it's
necessary that we have some public discussion on what to do with stuff.
You are correct that we talked about it some before.

I was hoping that the inventory database would have the added use of
advertising our unwanted stuff to the world, so we might sell some of it.
Unfortunately, the MySql server is rarely up, so the database is rarely
accessible to the public. I'm considering trying to move it off of Grex,
to solve that problem.

I'm leaning toward Jan's dumpster solution myself, and if STeve and Eric
show up and cart some things off to the storage locker, more power to
them.

Better for Sindi & Jim to haul them off to recycling than to fill a
dumpster with 'em.

Pro forma, should we announce that we're taking bids from any interested
party before throwing/giving the stuff away? Someone may be happy to
pay $3 for a cool-looking brick.

Getting rid of this stuff is a great idea! I suggest posting notices
in appropriate places on the System saying, essentially, that a list
of unwanted stuff is in Coop 79; that people are free to buy or
just take any or all of it; and that anything not disposed of
by a *fixed, firm date* will be tossed. A good fixed, firm date
might be March 1.
steve
response 20 of 75: Mark Unseen   Feb 2 01:20 UTC 2002

It would be a cruel thing, giving the Kiwanis people *any* of
our used up hardware junk. There is NO WAY that they'd be able
to do much with it, except perhaps foist it off on unsuspecting
artist types who might view large cumbersome VME cards from an
enlightened artistic point of view...

The prices are always a hard thing to come up with, but I
keep my ear to several sources trying to find out what people
have sold similar things for. For anything I'll ever put a
price to, I can guarantee that someone else can find that item
for 1/5th as much, to 20 times that. Not too long ago I heard
of a company selling Sun-3 cards for $100 each. I never heard
if they'd sold any.
jared
response 21 of 75: Mark Unseen   Feb 2 14:48 UTC 2002

Auction them off.

The rest should be put in the dumpster at a well announced time ;-)

This way we can gain some revenue from them and the other things such
as the scsi disks can possibly find a $home where they will be
loved.

Why do so many people want to landfill recyclable materials?
If these are normal SCSI drives that can go into Mac computers,
Kiwanis might want them for that. When we were there 6-year-old equipment
was our top of the line. I asked Bill Levak and Kent Nassen to look at the
list posted in this item.
