What are grex's operating expenses for two weeks?
aruba
response 2 of 21: Mark Unseen   Nov 9 16:17 UTC 2001

Take 436.55 (our expenses for October), multiply by 12, and divide by 26.
You get about $200. That doesn't include expenses that only come around
once a year (our insurance premium, for instance), so if you want a more
accurate number, add up all the debits for the last 12 months and then
divide by 26. All the treasurer's reports are in ~aruba/reports.

So would $100 a week let someone sponsor Agora and get their name in the
motd, maybe along with anniversary wishes or the like?

Heh. Thats an interesting idea. I'm not entirely sure that I
approve, but it is interesting. We've never done anything like that
before. I'd like to hear the general reaction from folks. I suspect
it will be more negative than positive.

I suppose that would be an idea which we could hold in reserve for
implementation (under strict limitation) in extreme circumstances of
financial desperation.

I would be disinclined to consider it otherwise. (My $0.02. YMMV.)

I'm going to be a stick-in-the-mud: When considering money-raising schemes,
please remember to consider the tax consequences: Even 501c(3) corporations
have to pay the Unrelated Business Income Tax.

There are good reasons to not provide "value" for "dues."

sell advertising and grex may as well go for-profit. Grex could go
public with a direct public offering of stock, naturally loading up the
current membership with stock beforehand. i mean if it comes down to
having to sell itself, you get in for a little you may as well get in for
a lot. But Grex isnt that ambitious, and the minute you start going
commercial, you start complicating things.

The Toledo radio station has been broadcasting a lot of commercials recently
and I think the others announce day sponsors. (The non-profits). But I don't
see any point of paying for advertising on grex as you can advertise yourself
all you want for free. You can also give grex a $100 donation and have the
treasurer thank you in a publicly read item. If someone wants to donate $200
and be thanked for sponsoring two weeks of agora, does that hurt anyone?

No, probably it wouldn't hurt. But I don't think anyone would do it.

So post your own ad in Agora. Free. In fact why not start an item in which
other people can post ads. Anyone who wants can ignore it. Or advertise in
classifieds if you want to buy or sell something other than yourself.

Grex is doing OK financially without ads. Why would we want ads? Just to
blend in better with the rest of the internet?

NPR and PBS have way too much advertising. Not here, too!
We are getting along fine as we are.

I cannot imagine what jp2 would put in an ad that he has not said already.
I regularly ignore the motd.

I think he wants to put an ad in the Agora login, not the motd.
But I don't think we should accept advertising in any case.

Personally, I never see the agora login page unless the I'm telnetted in
(very rare) or I'm in the conference for the first time after a seasonal
change.

Using Backtalk, I have assembled my own directory page which jumps to the
first of the new responses without going through the login page.

I used to ignore the MOTD because it tended to get too long, and would
scroll off my terminal window. I've since added a script to
my .profile that only shows me the new entries, and created
a .hushlogin file in my home directory.

Jamie: What are you asking for, exactly? An ad in the motd? A word of
thanks from the staff, like the one we give to the Observer for the ad of ours
that they run? An ASCII version of your face in the agora welcome screen?
We don't have an established way of having users 'sponsor' a conference, and
the word on its own doesn't mean much. I think the answer you get will depend
on what it is exactly that you're asking for.

A political campaign message, perhaps.
