Minutes of Grex Board of Directors meeting, 07 November 2001.
Attendees: other*, flem*, aruba*, mooncat*, eeyore*, bhelliom, mdw*,
STeve*, glenda, mary, remmers, janc, scott, krj
(* indicates board member)
1. Opening Gavel - 7:41pm
2. Chair's Report
Meg picked up a chair and waved it around a bit.
3. Treasurer's Report
October numbers: $585 in, $436 out. Auction
numbers are in: &779.00 in revenue.
4. Publicity Committee
"Took inventory. Mark will verify."
5. Staff Report
The Grex computer has been boringly, almost
frighteningly reliable. The recent meeting to determine the
hardware and software platforms for the next Grex resulted in
a decision to get a cheap Intel box and a cheap Sun SPARC64
anddevelop OpenBSD on both. After a while, we'll see what
works best for our needs, and probably put both into use as
parts of the next Grex. Vandal activity has decreased
minimally. User dang found a terminal server and a rack of
28.8 kbps modems with which to upgrade our dial-in
connectivity. The package might cost us as much as twenty
dollars.
6. Ballot Eligibility
Remmers, as ballot administrator, wants a directive from the
board regarding the eligibility of non-local members to run
for Board, given the by-law requiring face-to-face meetings.
Consensus is that all current candidates are eligible to run
and will thus appear on the ballot.
7. Purchase of Pentium Machine
Staff is requesting authorization to purchase a Pentium
Machine for the Next Grex development program. User remmers
is donating a suitable machine and the point is moot.
User tenser/cross is donation a couple of SPARC64s also,
so the upgrade plan is on schedule and under budget so far.
Scott may donate another Pentium machine as well.
8. Purchase Back-up Tapes
Exabyte tapes for $5.50 each? $20-25 for a head cleaner.
The board authorizes up to $150 for a 10-pack plus head cleaner
and shipping. other moves: the board of directors authorizes
staff to spend up to $150 to obtain needed backup supplies for
Grex. eeyore seconds. vote: 7-0 The motion carries.
9. Copyright Issues
User krj has prepared a packet of information to serve as a
starting point for board research. User mdw has been appointed
to try to formulate a list of questions on copyright issues to
which we need definitive answers in order to set appropriate
policy.
10. New Business
Hacking now equals terrorism, according to the law. Since
hacking is not clearly defined, STeve says we need to make
some technical adjustments to the web services we allow
non-validated users in order to prevent http-based attacks
on other machines.
11. Schedule Next Meeting
Wednesday 7 December 2001. 7:30 pm.
12. Closing Gavel - 9:26 pm

sheesh, that sounds like a boring meeting! I mean whats a board meeting
without some good ol'fashioned yelling and screaming, and knock down/drag out
fights! :)
seriously though, what are these adjustments to grex web services being
considered? I thought the new laws define hacking as terrorism only
defined it as terrorism if the authorities chose to define it as such--
meaning it isnt automatically terrorism, but can be considered as such.
Lets not overreact here.

The "adjustments to grex web services" has been previously in the works
for some time, and isn't a reaction to the gov't in any way, shape, or
form.

It's the proxy server. Currently up and running, though people are still
able to bypass it now. Later they won't be able to.

Yes. Because it includes the phrase, "STeve says," it is indeed
accurate. Becuase to the best of my ability to tell at the time, that
was pretty much what STeve said.
