If I remember correctly, July was low because Ameritech was refunding money
that they shouldn't have billed Grex (for lines that had been disconnected).

Right. I think I said in the July report that we could expect future bills
to be about $179.

I put this in Agora, but I'll put it here too. Grex received a very large
check yesterday, from an anonymous donor. It's for $1024, and it's
earmarked "to be used towards improving Grex's hardware and software
infrastructure." We've never received a check this big before.

Wow indeed! Many thanks to whoever it is. (The person evidently
knows about powers of 2...)

Would this merit upgrading to faster modems? Can the donor be asked
specifically what sorts of hardware or software improvements they would like?

Should we put a Dear Anonymous Donor......*T*H*A*N*K* *Y*O*U*.... message
in our motd?

Possibly Mark knows the name of the 'anonymous' donor as checks generally
require some sort of signature. (Was this a money order?).

I would guess that Mark probably does know the name of the anonymous
donor. However, I would also guess that there are reasons that the
donor wishes to remain anonymous. Posting a message in the MOTD or
making speculations as to who it might be are probably not something the
donor would like to see.

I would suggest accepting the donation, express appreciation for it,
and respect the privacy of the donor by not making this much fuss
about it, much less try to discover their identity.

I would presume that if the donor had specific desires beyond "buy hardware
and software with it" and "don't disclose who I am," they would have made
those intentions clear.

The donor does not have specific plans for the money, but trusts the Grex
board and staff to spend it wisely. I'll use the money to start the
"infrastructure fund", which will get a line on the treasurer's report each
month, so we can't forget about it.

Yeah, but it should be more than a line on the Treasurer's reprot. We need
to do something with it.
No, I don't have grand ideas....I'd leave them for those that know how Grex
runs. :)

The first step is adding it to the report, so we can see when and where it
gets spent.
