What sabre could do for Grex Mark Unseen   Jul 23 16:39 UTC 2003

I could write php code to make this dinosaur a real BBS.
I could write a java interface for party to bring it up to date.
I could interface pine with the website and make it more user friendly.
I could do it all for a few thousand $
You guys need to get a vision. Your plans lack imagination.

- This system has been a "real BBS" since before you were in diapers,
most likely
- A java interface to party would be nice
- It seems that a web interface to Pine is unnecessary. Grex is not in
the business of providing free email to the masses, email is just one of
the services provided as part of the larger Grex mission
- I'll give you a quarter if you go away

I quite like party the way it is. It's antiquated no doubt, but it attracts
people that really want to converse. We've had a few new additions lately,
which just goes to prove that this still works.

Adding a java interface would reduce party to the likes of Yahoo Chat. Sure
it looks pretty, but no one really wants to talk, just ask for girls to type
L or something equally lame.

Re 3: heh. But he wants to be paid a few thousand for it ...

Actually, a low price. To actually write a bbs and a party interface and a
web mail interface from scratch (as opposed to installing existing packages
which seems like a more sensible approach), I'd probably be asking a minimum
of $20,000, probably more like $40,000 to get something "better" than the
existing code.

Of course, I wouldn't expect any client to give me such a contract without
my first giving them reason to believe that I can do it. This starts with
references to previous clients and demonstrations of other software systems
I have built. We'd also have a long discussion of how I would undertake
the process, so they could judge my understanding of the system requirements
and my depth of understanding of the technologies that could be applied to
do the job.

I suppose if I were to wish to start such a conversation with sabre, I would
ask him to explain why he thinks pine would be the best mail tool to choose
as a basis for a web mail interface.

Don't waste your time with this one Jan. Even your response is so far
over its (sabre's) head that it will never even realize it has been
addressed.

Hmmmm. It seems that my skills are questioned. You forget the old saying
"don't look a gift horse in the mouth"

RE#7
What the fuck do you know bitch? I can code circles around a poser like you.
I shouldn't waste my time if a "respected" board member like Eric insults me.
How did this overated buffoon get on the board.

I do have the ability janc. I will email you specifics.
If I don't get voted out of here that is.

Sabre, if you're looking to make money doing software work, you're barking
up the wrong tree trying to get it out of Grex. Grex doesn't have that kind
of money to spend.

Um, "gift horses" are usually free. A horse you're buying you look into
very carefully.

Which is, as Mark says, moot. Grex has no money. Grex has a number of
good experienced programmers willing to work free.
